Many people expected Sony’s latest PlayStation Showcase to be on par with E3, and they were sorely disappointed. The KOTOR remake, Alan Wake Remastered, Rainbow Six Extraction, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, and more graced its virtual stage. Final Fantasy 16 was one thing that many people noticed was lacking.
It seems to reason that it would have been there because it was introduced at a Sony event and appears to be a PS5 timed exclusive. Despite the lack of a new teaser, many observant viewers saw what they believe to be the release date for Final Fantasy 16 in the show’s beginning. The best thing is that there are several reasons to believe it’s true.
Fans noticed a sign that reads “Valisthea 06.16” during the opening, which can be seen at the 0:38 moment in the clip below. It appears in the form of a subway, complete with timings and arrivals for numerous stops.
Because Final Fantasy 16 is set in Valisthea, many have assumed that the game will be released on June 16, 2022. One thing to keep in mind is that the trailer has several Easter eggs with no apparent purpose, such as Pac-Man, Alan Wake, and Deathloop, to mention a few.
As a result, it’s reasonable to assume that not all Easter eggs are significant, but some are. The cover image for God of War: Ragnarok was used prominently in the trailer’s introduction. Given that the teaser for Final Fantasy 16 takes place in a subway with a certain month and date, it’s safe to assume that it implies more than other Easter eggs.
The lack of a consistent release schedule for Final Fantasy adds to this. Even having global releases, the franchise hasn’t truly followed a pattern since its beginning in 1987. It’s had early, summer, fall, and Christmas releases, and given Sony’s track record (and the exclusivity aspect), a summer 2022 release date for Final Fantasy 16 seems likely.
The only significant flaw is that the game’s release date is on a Thursday, while most games are released on Tuesdays or Fridays. There are a few exceptions, and Thursday is near enough to Friday that it isn’t a major inconvenience. It might have chosen this day since it coincides with the 16th major release.
Fans will soon find out whether this is the case, especially if the film is set to release in June. Many fans are expecting a surprise debut by Final Fantasy 16 during the Tokyo Game Show, which takes place from September 30 to October 3. If it does, confirmation might come even sooner than expected.
