Hoa is a Ghibli-Esque Platformer Expected to Release in 2021

Fans of both Studio Ghibli movies as well as platformer games will be ecstatic to learn about Hoa, an upcoming Vietnamese game that seamlessly blends both of these wonderful elements together. Many individuals within the video game community have been looking forward to this game ever since the title was announced and a few teasers of the game were unveiled.

What makes it even more mesmerizing, asides from its charming art style, is its incredible soundtrack. Now, PM Studios released a brand-new announcement trailer ahead of its expected April 2021 release date for both Nintendo Switch and PC.

The word “hoa” is Vietnamese in origin and means “flower.” The choice of title makes sense because not only are KYX Studios and Skrollcat Studios based in Vietnam, but the game itself consists of a myriad of flower imagery or nature scenes.

Even though the video game industry has grown and changed so much for the past couple of years, Hoa will probably be one of the first Vietnamese titles to make its way to a highly popular platform such as the Nintendo Switch.

From what we know and can see about the title so far, it can’t be argued that Skrollcat Studio’s side-scrolling adventure definitely deserves some mainstream recognition. Not a lot of details about the game may have been revealed unlike other titles these days, but you only need to watch a couple of minutes of gameplay in order to understand the gist of the game.

Besides, one look and it’s already clear to see just how much the developer was able to capture the same calming art style present in Studio Ghibli’s works. As for its gameplay, it’s basically a puzzle-platformer. Hoa follows the main protagonist of the same name as she goes on an adventure back to her past.

The game’s environment is confirmed to be made out of hand-painted art, which honestly looks amazing. Hoa consists of a variety of characters that you will encounter along the way. Anything is possible in this charming and magical world, so much so that even the rocks are “alive and have personalities.”

The art and how the game plays aren’t the only reasons why so many are drawn to Hoa. The upcoming title also has an impressive soundtrack that truly soaks in the fact that it’s a Ghibli-esque game all while incorporating a unique Vietnamese sound.

Without a doubt, it’s definitely so exciting to see that Asian countries are slowly but surely making a name for themselves in the mainstream video game industry, such as Genshin Impact by Chinese developer miHoYo and now Hoa. This is definitely a huge step and could serve as an inspiration to other studios out there.

Hoa has been in the works for a few years now, and there were times when the developer was silent about its development for months. However, the ball started rolling for Hoa when it got featured in Nintendo’s Indie World Direct. Now, it has a Steam page available for those fans who want to add the game to their wishlist.
