With the release of Knockout City, developers Velen Studios and EA had effectively fulfilled the “dodgebrawler” genre of gaming that had piqued fans’ interest for months. Many fans were drawn in by the game’s visual style and music production, but the prospect of crossplay and ease of access eventually sealed the deal for many Knockout City players.

Knockout City is a 3-on-3 dodgeball arena-based action multiplayer game in which players collect dodgeballs spread around different arenas and launch them at the opposing side, who must block or intercept the hits in order to avoid taking excessive damage.


Catching the ball is one of the most important ways of safety in Knockout City since a well-timed grab will not only catch a player’s attack off-balance but also transfer the initiative to an opponent with an expanded buff. On the other hand, players will use one basic trick to entice the opponent’s valuable defense.

Players facing opponents with razor-sharp reflexes that can still sense when the ball is approaching them and grab the ball with near-perfect accuracy will need to practice how to use their Fake Throw. The player can start a throwing animation similar to an actual throw by pressing the correct thumbstick on the joystick or the F key for keyboard and mouse players. Still, the player will also keep the ball in the hopes of deceiving the opponent.

Opponents who fell for the false throw will try to catch the “ball,” leaving them vulnerable to an open throw due to a missed catch animation. The player must already have a charged shot on standby in order for this mix to work. If a player attempts to throw the ball until it has filled, the opponent may have more time to rebound and stop it. Their Knockout City rival, on the other hand, is a sitting duck with a charged arrow.


Savvy rivals will use the same technology against matches, causing eagle-eyed players to focus on the Knockout City dodgeball rather than the opponent’s animation. If the player aims for the tossed ball instead of the throwing animation, they will call their opponent’s bluff and catch them off guard.

A false throw without an answer from the opponent, similar to a missed catch animation, would leave the user out in the open before the throw animation ends, allowing the opposing player to take advantage of a mismanaged action.
