The Nintendo Switch sales have been a phenomenon and a return to form for the iconic console producer, winning over a lot of fans and rejuvenating the company’s home console sales after the Wii U unsuccessfully met expectations. A chunk of the Nintendo Switch’s success can be attributed comprehensive list of first and third-party titles that allure a wide array of players.
Titles as diverse as The Witcher 3, Animal Crossing, Hyrule Warriors, and the Crash Bandicoot remakes have all found a new home on the system, but the most successful third party franchise on the console possibly isn’t one most fans would expect.
According to details from NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella, the LEGO game franchise is the biggest third party franchise on the Nintendo Switch. The brick-compelled adventure franchise is the ninth bestselling series in video game history in terms of US dollar sales and is commemorating its 25th anniversary on the market since launching with LEGO Fun to Build on the Sega Pico back in 1995, which was a Japan-exclusive.
Contemporary fans are likely more familiar with the developer Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO Star Wars series, and the myriad of titles made with the same gameplay since the first installment in that series came out 15 years ago.
The NPD Group states the franchise’s bestselling games in the United States are LEGO Star Wars 2 The Original Trilogy, LEGO Batman, LEGO Star Wars The Complete Saga, while the LEGO Group revealed that the bestselling title in the series to launch internationally is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.
Some LEGO game US fun facts, from The NPD Group:
– LEGO is the 9th biggest VG franchise in history ($ sales)
– The top 3 best-selling games: LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, LEGO Batman and LEGO Star Wars II
– LEGO is the best-selling 3rd party franchise on Nintendo platforms https://t.co/3Zt3MYNp48

Based on the LEGO franchise’s successful performance on the Nintendo Switch, it seems that the Japanese gaming giant’s reputation as the company with the most kid-oriented console isn’t going away anytime soon.
Publisher Warner Bros. and developer Traveller’s Tales were popular for launching a preposterous number of games in the series during the 2000s and 2010s, but the latest LEGO game on consoles was The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame last 2019, and the only upcoming title will be LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga which appears to include some never before seen features when it releases next year.
With The Skywalker Saga scheduled to cover the last couple of mainline Star Wars films in 2021, the development team will possibly have to find a new path to continue the LEGO Star Wars franchise, which remains a bestseller among the studio’s many series.
Disney’s revamped canon may have removed some of the Extended Universe choices the franchise may have once been able to play around with, but several of the new stories would make for some exciting gameplay for the franchise. One particular wish of fans that has received a lot of credit lately is for a LEGO Mandalorian game, based on the ongoing hit series exclusively available on Disney+.
