RuneScape Celebrates Its 20th Year With New Events And More

Time truly doesn’t wait for anyone, and now the groundbreaking RuneScape will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a plethora of exciting new content that will give us a glimpse of the game’s past, present, and future.

The beloved MMO was initially launched in 2001, and the title has been thriving and evolving since then. Since its release, RuneScape has had more than 1,000 content expansions and updates. Not only that, the game was released on different platforms as well.

The past couple of years have been treating RuneScape extremely well in terms of players. As a matter of fact, 2020 alone saw the game reach 1.2 million players. British developer Jagex definitely made an excellent choice when it decided to continue supporting RuneScape throughout the years since its launch, and now the company is surely reaping the benefits.

RuneScape was remade from the ground up back in 2016—turning into a new and improved standalone title with enhanced graphics from a simple Java browser game. From there, Jagex was able to release the title onto other platforms, including Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.

In 2013, Old School RuneScape, which is the sister system of the main game, was launched on Android and iOS devices. In 2019, the beta form of the main game was released on mobile platforms as well. In line with this, the developer stated that RuneScape will be fully released for that specific platform within the year.

Seeing how much the franchise has improved over the past few years is truly heartwarming, and we can’t wait to see what other improvements will be made to the MMO in the future.

In a recent press release, Jagex has detailed all the exciting things it has planned for RuneScape’s 20th anniversary, including new content that will be made available to both versions of the game. The post states that the celebration will last the whole year long, and it will kick off with an in-game festivity called “The Grand Party.”

Then, there will be an epic storyline that comes in multiple parts, as players will journey through the entire history of RuneScape and introduce an upcoming conflict with the Elder Gods. This is definitely intriguing to think about, seeing as the Elder Gods are the creators of Gielinor and are therefore entities you don’t want to mess around with.

Old School RuneScape will also be receiving love from the developer, as it will host its own festivities as well. For this year’s anniversary celebration, Jagex will introduce Old School RuneScape players to a brand-new storyline that involves the Green Gnome Child.

Not only that, but players will also be given the opportunity to fight iconic monsters from the game, such as dragons and demons. It’s also worth mentioning that this will be the year when Old School RuneScape is expected to launch in Steam.

No matter how long it has been, RuneScape in general will always have a special place in the hearts of old-school gamers and within the gaming industry as well. It seems that the developer is as happy about the game’s existence as we are, because the team hopes to keep supporting RuneScape for many years to come.
