Sony Gives Tips On How To Keep Your PlayStation 5 From Overheating

Sony has given players a couple of advice on how they can prevent their PlayStation 5 from overheating when they finally get to play the next-gen console releases this Thursday. After one PlayStation 5 overheated at a Best Buy branch a few days ago, the gaming community has been a little worried about the machine’s cooling capabilities.

The patent for the heat sink of Sony’s next-gen console was announced last April, with the internal design displaying the heat sink that will be situated on the bottom of the circuit board. Proper ventilation and heat output are essential components of all gaming devices, from next-gen consoles to high-end computers.

Both the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 have been criticized by the gaming community and experts to determine whether the machines can keep themselves cool enough given they’re provided sufficient room to breathe properly. For instance, the Xbox Series X’s heat is comparable to that of the Xbox One X, according to a staff of Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft.

With the PlayStation 5 releasing this week, Sony has provided some advice on how owners can prevent their systems from overheating. When talking about the best practices for setting up a PlayStation 5 at home, the tech giant says players should do the following:

  • “Do not allow dust to build up on the vents. Use a cleaning tool such as a vacuum cleaner to remove dust buildup.”
  • “Do not cover with cloth.”
  • “Do not place in a narrow or cramped space.”
  • “Do not place on a carpet or rug with long fibers.”
  • “Place the console at least 10 cm. (4 in.) away from a wall surface.”

The fear of overheating haunts all gamers who want their coveted machines to last as long as possible. Sony’s tips for making sure the PlayStation 5 has the slightest chance of succumbing to extreme heat are by no means new guidelines.

Proper ventilation will always be the responsibility of a customer, as keeping devices that generate the type of heat that gaming PCs and modern consoles do in an entertainment display without a hole for airflow will definitely cause major issues. These problems are not the liability of the manufacturer, but instead the inappropriate misplacement of owners.

At this age in the gaming generation, expert gamers should by now understand how critical cooling capabilities are for their machines. While following all the necessary precautions can still result in an overheating console, taking steps to lessen the risk could save both money and time on shipping and repairs, especially when it comes to a console as expensive as the PlayStation 5.

While each generation unavoidably has several faulty oddities that will overheat regardless of cleanliness and placement, such as the issues faced by the initial batch of Xbox One X, following protocol in keeping the machine cool enough to continue working along is a very much reciprocal effort by consumer and company.
