The Asterisk War is an action-adventure anime series adapted from a light novel series written by Yū Miyazaki and illustrated by Okiura. The light novel series of the same name was initially published on the 25th of September 2021, and it became so popular that it was adapted into its own manga series a year after.
Due to its popularity, A-1 Pictures decided to pick up the series and turn it into an anime. Thus, The Asterisk War’s first season was first broadcasted in Japan in 2015. What Is The Asterisk War All About?
The Asterisk War takes place in the future, during a time when the Earth as we know it is experiencing incredible economic distress. But before the show’s events, a major impact known as Invertia took place that completely destroyed most of the cities. Not only that, but the advent of Invertia also brought about the rise of humans with superpowers, who are called the Genestella.
As you can imagine, confusion and chaos ensued after Invertia, which significantly shifted the world’s power balance to favor megacorporations. Because of this, a group known as the Integrated Enterprise Foundation became more powerful than ever.
In the present time, The Asterisk War follows the life and story of Ayato Amagiri, a Genestella boy who transfers into a highly-renowned academy for the Genestella. In this school, tournaments known as Festas are regularly held to test the strength and mettle of the students. Specifically, Ayato transfers to Seidoukan Academy located in the city of Asterisk, which is the fifth-best academy out of six.
Despite Ayato’s excitement and enthusiasm at transferring to this academy, things don’t go as well as he’d expected during his first days when he accidentally stumbles upon Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld, who happened to be undressing at that moment. Because of this, he gets challenged to a duel. Fortunately, Claudia Enfield, Seidoukan Academy’s student council president, stopped the fight prematurely before any real damage could be done. Even though Ayato and Julis had a rough first meeting, they eventually become close friends.
Later in, it’s revealed that Ayato isn’t actually interested in the tournaments or Festas. Instead, he only joined Seidoukan because he wanted to investigate his sister’s disappearance, who was once a student at the same academy. However, since he’s enrolled in a Genestella academy, Ayato has no choice but to participate in the Festas. And so, both Julis and Ayato participate in several Festas over the course of the show while simultaneously trying to find out what happened to Ayato’s sister.
Character Backgrounds

Ayato Amagiri
The show’s main protagonist is Ayato Amagiri, a young yet powerful Genestella who decided to enroll in Seidoukan Academy to try and find her lost elder sister. After her first encounter with Julis, both of them become good friends, so much so that they join the Pheonix Festa together as a tag team pair.
Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld
Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld is Lieseltania’s princess, a fictional country situated in Western Europe. Julis is an astounding Genestella fighter and shows so much promise, so much so that she’s Seidoukan Academy’s fifth-ranked fighter. Julis has one goal, and that’s to achieve the Grand Slam. To do so, she has to win several Festas, including the Phoenix Festa, the Gryps Festa, and the Lindvolus Festa.
Claudia Enfield
Claudia Enfield is another fearsome fighter in the academy and is also the student council president. In fact, she has held that position since she was in middle school, as she has considerable influence given the fact that she’s the daughter of one of Integrated Enterprise Foundation’s esteemed members.
Kirin Toudou
Kirin Todou is yet another important character in The Asterisk War. She’s the eldest daughter of the Todou family; as such, she has had training in their family’s fighting style. When Kirin was a young girl, a robber kidnapped her, and while her father was able to kill the robber and save her, he ended up imprisoned because of that.
Because of Kirin’s unfortunate childhood, she grew up with her Uncle, who enrolled her in Seidoukan Academy. Just like Ayato, Kirin also has a goal, which is to free her father from imprisonment.
Saya Sasamiya
Saya Sasamiya is Ayato’s childhood friend, who also happened to be enrolled in the same academy as he is. She’s a gun-wielding Genestella who has been trained in the Amagiri Shinmei fighting style.
The Asterisk War’s Renewal Status
At the moment, there’s no news yet if The Asterisk War will have a third season, so it’s best to say that it’s currently on hold or pending. However, there’s also no news whether the show’s producers will be canceling the anime, too, and this seems to be the current trend for anime TV series nowadays.
However, it’s common knowledge that an animated show takes a very long time to create and finish, so waiting for updates regarding your favorite anime is a common practice.
