It appears that the highly popular video game developer and publisher, Blizzard Entertainment, is currently working on multiple mobile games that are based on the studio’s already-existing IP. What’s even more interesting about this announcement is the fact Blizzard revealed that in terms of development, these games are already in the “advanced” stages.
2020 was yet another successful fiscal year for the video game company, and given that BlizzCon 2021 is fast approaching, Blizzard will once again be revealing more information about its latest titles and their development progress. This year’s BlizzCon, otherwise called BlizzConline, will be an online convention due to the ongoing global pandemic.
However, this doesn’t mean that it will be any less eventful. Blizzard will also be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, so the company has a lot of fun digital activities and rewards planned for the various titles in its repertoire.
During a recent financial earnings call, Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick discussed with investors about how the company has plans to expand Warcraft, one of its most popular franchises. The CEO explains that at the moment, Blizzard is concentrating on providing “premium content” to its players because it wants to expand on the current World of Warcraft community.
As a part of this ongoing strategy, Kotick reveals that the company is currently working on several free-to-play mobile games that are a part of World of Warcraft’s universe, and all of these titles are allegedly already in their “advanced” stages.
Asides from this, though, Kotick also discusses another mobile game that’s currently in the works as well. This game in question is entitled Diablo Immortal, which has received polarizing opinions so far.
The Blizzard executive states that while the upcoming title’s limited test trials were able to garner positive reviews from those who were able to test it, Diablo Immortal’s “The Market” feature wasn’t as well-received. If anything, it reminded players of Diablo 3‘s Auction House, which many fans were wary about.
That being said, Blizzard’s community of fans isn’t exactly surprised by this news. For several years now, rumors have been circulating regarding a mobile Warcraft game, most especially when the company posted several job listings back in 2017.
There was one popular rumor in 2018 which claimed that Blizzard is working on an AR mobile game similar to the highly popular Pokemon Go. Seeing as Kotick mentioned that the studio is working on several games, there’s a chance that an AR title could be one of them, or perhaps even the Diablo 2 remake that was recently revealed to be in development.
Recently, remake studio Vicarious Visions was merged into Blizzard. This studio may be familiar to many, as it’s responsible for popular titles like the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 +2. Given this information, it’s highly likely that Vicarious Visions is steering the Diablo 2 remake, although this information hasn’t been completely confirmed just yet.
That being said, while it’s definitely exciting news that Blizzard is developing several games in an effort to expand the community, not a lot of fans are psyched to play games of this caliber on their mobile devices. Still, we hope to learn more information about this during BlizzConline.
