In 2019, Dell Technologies conceived its Mentor Connect program. This initiative aims to offer mentoring, leadership, and networking opportunities for professionals in Singapore, particularly women, which will harness the strengths and networks in the industry.

During that time, the Mentor Connect program was piloted with only eight mentors from Dell and three other participating companies, Singapore’s IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority), Salesforce, and ST Engineering. 

This time, with the launch of its 2023 edition, its fourth edition since its launch, this cross-company and women-centric mentorship program has grown to involve already nearly 50 mentors from 11 companies, benefitting 276 women mentees. 

Some companies that recently joined this initiative include Aon, Google Cloud, DBS, DXC Technology, J.P. Morgan, Equinix, NTT Singapore, Prudential, and SCWO (Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation).

What the program is about

Dell’s Mentor Connect program brings together a select group of the company’s customers and partners to push forward a diverse leadership development through networking and company-to-company best practices exchange. 

Through this program, various mentors from the participating organizations are asked to help mentees cultivate hard and soft skills that will, in turn, help them advance to the following stages of their careers. 

Solving problems 

Subsequently, Dell’s Mentor Connect program is helping solve problems in the technology industry. Andy Sim, the vice president and managing director of Dell Technologies Singapore, has shared how this happens. 

Sim said he had seen the struggles women in the industry face, a reason why he keeps promoting the success of Dell’s Mentor Connect initiative. 

He cited data showing that women only make up less than half of the workforce in the tech industry, and only 14 percent of women serve on the boards of tech companies in Singapore. He added this is because of various factors, such as gender bias, Asian cultural and sociological factors, lack of role models, unconscious bias, and imposter syndrome. These are what the program aims to address. 

The Mentor Connect program works with different stakeholders and organizations from other industries to strengthen women’s representation in the tech sector. The mentors and mentees have gained the advantage of learning from each other and doing their part in realizing the goal of developing their roles in the industry. 

Nod from the government

Interestingly, Dell’s Mentor Connect program has also gained support from the Singaporean government. Josephine Teo, Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information, was present during the kick-off event of the program’s 2023 edition and said there is “a lot of value” from initiatives that support women toward leadership roles, specifically in the technology sector.

Threads, the newest social media platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, is making history. It is spreading like wildfire.

This number has successfully smashed the record of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is touted as the fastest-growing consumer app. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool that users can chat with to ask questions, request assistance on tasks, get coding done, and so much more. 

ChatGPT took two months to reach the 100 million user mark. Meanwhile, TikTok, another popular social media app, took nine months to get that target, while Instagram took two and a half years to reach that mark since it launched. 

PVP Live previously released a news report saying Threads has garnered around 30 million downloads a few hours since its launch. Then, Zuckerberg told CBS News that Threads got over 70 million people signed up within the first two days from its launch. That is how fast the spread of Threads is.

Online scams are rampant nowadays. What’s worse, these scammers even use the names of credible platforms to trick people, such as Gmail. Google recently warned of scammers impersonating Gmail’s technical support team to do such things as stealing your financial information. The increasing number of website pop-ups and scam phone calls that may steal your financial and personal data has prompted Google to issue a warning. 

These scammers attack when users need to recover their account credentials or change their passwords. Users may receive a call from these scammers offering them “help” when their objective is to hack your account. 

Google reiterates that the only way to seek Gmail technical support is via the official website of Gmail’s Help Center. In Gmail’s Help Center, you can already get the help you need for any issue you are encountering, such as signing in, resetting your password, creating a new account, changing your Gmail settings, and much more. 

Pop-ups

One way that scammers use to trick users and steal their information is through third-party websites and pop-ups that offer “technical support for Gmail and other products of Google.”

These pop-up sites may request payment from users, which is something that Google won’t ever do, the company told news outlets. 

Google also clarified that these pop-up websites that claim to provide password reset and recovery assistance, as well as other Gmail-related technical support, are in no way tied to Google. The company said it would never ask for payment from users just to recover their account information or change their password.

Calls 

Pop-up websites are not the only media scammers use to make users fall into their trap. They may also call you to inform you that your Google account has been “hijacked” or your computer has a “virus or malware” that needs to be addressed. 

If users become victims, these calls may deceive you into giving the scammers your username and password, giving them access to your accounts. 

Google clarified that it does not offer phone-based Gmail support and that these unscrupulous phone calls are in no way affiliated with Google. 

How to protect yourself

To protect yourself and to avoid becoming a victim of these scams, Google said you must never provide your account credential to anybody or a random person claiming to be from Google. 

Also, do not fall prey to their words. Scams are often designed to create a sense of urgency, prompting you to follow what they are saying immediately. 

Then, you must also double-check and triple-check the details they are claiming. For example, is there really a virus in your system? Be sure to confirm this.

In other words, stop and ignore these individuals. If they demand payment or ask for your personal details, such as your bank information, never give these to them.
