The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a government office in India under its Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has urged iPhone users in the country to update their phones immediately if they do not want hackers to take full control of their devices. Here’s the news story. 

CERT-In stated that older models of iPhones, such as the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 series, iPhone 8 series, and iPhone SE first-gen, are also vulnerable to this security threat, according to the office’s official website. 

It added that aside from iPhones, iPads, including iPad Air, Pro, and Mini, are also not free from the attacks, so iPad users must also immediately update their devices to the latest version of iPadOS. 

CERT-In said these vulnerabilities are currently occurring in Apple iOS and iPadOS because of improper input validation issues in Kernel and improper state management issues on WebKit. 

Kernel is the core of any operating system, while WebKit pertains to the core technology behind the Apple Safari browser. 

If iPhone and iPad users fail to take action, CERT-In said that attackers could execute arbitrary code on the target system. In other words, they can fully control the user’s device. 

Fortunately, Apple has spoken about this issue and said they are aware of it. On the iOS Kernel issue, Apple’s support page stated, “An app may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS released before iOS 15.7.” 

Regarding the issue on WebKit, Apple pointed out, “An app may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS released before iOS 15.7.”

Kaspersky researchers discovered the vulnerabilities. Kaspersky is a multinational cybersecurity and anti-virus provider. 

The warning from India’s government came after Apple began releasing new iOS updates for iPhones. These updates include iOS 15.7.7 and iPadOS 15.7.7 for all iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 models, first-gen models of iPhone SE, fourth-gen models of iPad Air and iPad mini, and seventh-gen models of iPad touch. 

Furthermore, Apple also released iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1 updates for iPhone 8 and later, all models of iPad Pro, iPad Air third-gen and later units, iPad fifth-gen and later units, and iPad mini fifth-gen and later units.

An Internet safety watchdog in Australia is being added to the long list of individuals and groups who are losing their confidence in Twitter ever since billionaire Elon Musk bought and took over the platform in October last year. 

Now, this Australian Internet safety watchdog is threatening to fine Twitter for its failure to address online abuse, stating that Musk’s takeover has brought “toxicity and hate” to life on the platform. 

‘We need accountability’

Julie Inman Grant, the e-safety commissioner – and interestingly, also a former Twitter employee – told news outlets on Thursday that Twitter is the subject of one in three complaints reported in Australia concerning online hate speech. 

She, together with her group, is giving Twitter 28 days to clean up or sort out the “toxicity and hate” happening on the platform, or else Twitter would have to pay around $475,000 for each day it missed the deadline. 

Grant added that Twitter must return to them with a series of concrete plans showing what actions it is taking to prevent online hate on the platform and implement its own rules. 

“Twitter appears to have dropped the ball on tackling hate,” said Grant, who previously worked on cyber safety at Twitter after her 17-year stint at Microsoft.

She also said that the watchdog is not alone when it comes to those concerned about the increasing levels of toxicity and hate on Twitter, specifically hurled against marginalized communities. 

“We are also concerned by numerous reports of content remaining widely accessible that is likely in breach of Twitter’s own terms of service,” Grant added. “We need accountability from these platforms and action to protect their users, and you cannot have accountability without transparency.”

Warning from EU

Twitter is seemingly not having a perfect day lately. It appears it is in hot water from various groups around the world. After the warning it received from an Australian Internet safety watchdog, a commissioner from the European Union is visiting California soon to visit Twitter’s headquarters and meet with Musk, as well as other tech offices and executives. 

The EU commissioner, Thierry Breton, will make this trip just weeks before the EU’s Digital Service Act (DSA) takes full effect for the world’s biggest social media platforms, not just Twitter but also Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. 

Since Musk took over Twitter, he has modified several rules about what kind of language is permitted on the site, even if it is offensive, or spurs hate and fake news – opposing the EU’s new rules. 

The billionaire accepted the challenge for Twitter to go through DSA’s “stress test” to see if his platform will adhere to EU’s standards, though the results will not be made public. During his Paris trip last week, he also said he is ready to meet the demands of the DSA.

However, observers are not confident Musk will stand by his word. 

Yesterday, Breton also warned Musk that Twitter must have sufficient resources to moderate harmful content by August 25 or be tagged as violating the bloc’s rules. 

“I am the enforcer. I represent the law, which is the will of the state and the people,” the EU commissioner said.

As we draw closer and closer to the first deliveries of Tesla’s Cybertruck, a rival company like Ford is ensuring it stays on top of the competition. Ford’s chief executive officer Jim Farley recently sat down in an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, stating no-holds-barred statements against the Cybertruck. Here’s the news. 

Not a real work truck

Farley told CNBC he is not worried that this new venture from Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, will drain Ford of their customers, saying that while America “loves an underdog,” when it comes to electric vehicle (EV) trucks and vans, Ford still knows the customers “better than anyone.”

“The reality is, America loves an underdog — and we are the market leader for EV trucks and vans, and we know those customers better than anyone,” Ford’s CEO said. “And if he wants to design a Cybertruck for Silicon Valley people, fine. It’s like a cool high-end product parked in front of a hotel,” Farley continued. “But I don’t make trucks like that. I make trucks for real people who do real work, and that’s a different kind of truck.”

Tesla describes its upcoming Cybertruck as having “better utility than a truck with more performance than a sports car.”

Musk stated that the Cybertruck will be available later this year, with deliveries planned to start by the third quarter of 2023.

These fierce comments from Ford’s CEO came amidst his company’s competition with Tesla in producing EV trucks and Ford being the first automotive company to partner with the latter on its Supercharger network. 

Ford is one of the few automakers also to produce an EV pickup truck that is comparable to Tesla’s Cybertruck. In 2022, Ford said it was able to deliver more than 13,000 electric F-150 trucks and fulfill about 200,000 reservations. 

Moreover, interestingly, Ford is also the first automotive company to ink a deal with Tesla so it can use the latter’s expansive Supercharger network consisting of more than 12,000 DC fast chargers in the United States and Canada. Ford customers will gain access to these charging stations beginning next year. 

Ford is getting a $9.2 billion government loan to catch up with Tesla

Meanwhile, and further adding to the report earlier, a piece of news from Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Ford is getting a whopping $9.2 billion government loan to catch up with Tesla – yes, taxpayers’ money.

HP recently partnered with Morning Consult to produce a study that revealed how the climate crisis is influencing parental decisions on various tenets, particularly on shopping, career, and even family size. Morning Consult is a business intelligence company that delivers insights and custom market research dealing with people’s thoughts. 

“Families, like all our customers, rely on HP to connect them to the things that matter most, be it work, entertainment, or loved ones,” HP’s Global Head of Social Impact, Michele Malejki, said in HP’s official news release. “It’s one of the reasons parents are top of mind for us. And like every generation before them, today’s parents have their own unique pressures, especially the climate crisis. It’s why we’re going beyond our business impact to make our business better for people and the planet.” 

Last month, HP collaborated with Morning Consult to study how parents’ decisions from various parts of the globe are influenced by climate change, including the actions they are taking. 

Five thousand parents were surveyed in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Mexico, and Singapore.

The study found that climate change affects parental decisions in many facets of life. Distinct trends include climate anxiety, parents preferring companies with sustainable goals, and parents choosing sustainable products when shopping. 

Specifically, 91 percent of surveyed parents are concerned about the climate crisis. Fifty-three percent say the climate crisis influences their decisions on how many children to have. Meanwhile, 43 percent say they prefer working for a company committed to saving the environment. 

Furthermore, 64 percent of the parents say they prefer buying sustainably sourced products, such as clothing, pet supplies, and tech products. Fifty-one percent of the parents also believe companies have so much responsibility in ensuring their practices won’t harm the environment. 

These findings came as HP released its annual Sustainable Impact report for the 22nd year. HP is known for its efforts and initiative to protect the environment, such as reducing carbon footprint, reducing single-use plastic packaging, and counteracting deforestation.

But that’s not all. HP also manages its environmental impact by adopting environmentally responsible practices when developing its products, in its operations, and in its supply chain. 

HP’s Chief Sustainability Officer, James McCall, also said, “Our research correlates to what we see in our business: we are keeping customers, winning new sales, and attracting talent because of our Sustainable Impact initiatives and sustainable products. If we are serious about changing the trajectory of the climate crisis, industry must go beyond, changing the mindset of ‘do no harm’ to ‘do more good.’”
