Ford reverses AM radio removal decision

Ford said it is reversing its decision about halting the addition of amplitude modulation (AM) capability to its future vehicle models.

In a Twitter post, Ford CEO Jim Farley shared that its 2024 Ford and Lincoln models would still include AM radios and promised to provide a software update for the EVs the company released without the capability.

The executive also noted that there are other ways to access AM on Ford vehicles. “Customers can currently listen to AM radio content in a variety of ways in our vehicles – including via streaming – and we will continue to innovate to deliver even better in-vehicle entertainment and emergency notification options in the future,” Farley wrote.

Farley said the turnaround was the fruit of talks with policy leaders, who are pushing “the importance of AM broadcast radio as a part of the emergency alert system.” Last week in Washington, lawmakers also presented legislation that would require companies like Ford to continue including AM capabilities in their vehicle offerings in the future. It stresses that AM remains relevant in the present era as it works at lower frequencies and longer wavelengths, making it useful for public safety alerts.

However, different companies see the technology as old, especially in EVs. In particular, the companies said that EVs produce more electromagnetic interference, which can affect the reception of AM signals. This can result in static, noise, and distorted sounds. Companies BMW, Tesla, Volkswagen, Volvo, Mazda, Polestar, and Rivian share the same opinion, with the Zero Emission Transportation Association believing the bill will “slow innovation and reduce consumer preference.” However, with the bill seemingly getting more support, these companies might soon join Ford in its decision.

It’s official: Google Bard now includes images in its responses. It is one of the features teased during the company’s I/O 2023 conference weeks, and Bard product lead Jack Krawczyk said it is now live.

Google is determined to dethrone Bing Chat by producing a more powerful chatbot. And while Bard’d initial entrance wasn’t so pleasing due to a factual error, Google is continuously beefing it up. One of the latest updates users can now try in the bot is the addition of images in its responses.

“Bard includes images in relevant responses and also when you specifically ask for them, starting with English,” announced Krawczyk. “In the coming weeks, Bard will be more visual. We’ll add support for more languages, ability to generate images, and prompt Bard with images using Google Lens.”

In the demo shown on Twitter, Bard can be seen using multiple images relevant to the user’s requests. And as noted by Krawczyk, the photos include links, allowing Bard to credit the sources.

The update follows the addition of other features and improvements in the chatbot in the past few weeks. Last week, Google enhanced Bard’s summarization capabilities and link source identification. And earlier this month, the company announced Japanese and Korean support for Bard, one-click options to export content, and the availability of a dark theme.

Netflix starts charging $7.99/month for accounts sharing passwords outside households

In 2017, Netflix tweeted that “Love is sharing a password.” Well, it recently changed the definition of affection by beginning its password-sharing crackdown.

If you have someone hitching on your Netflix account, you will be forced to choose between kicking them out or paying additional for them. In its announcement on Tuesday, Netflix said US-based users sharing their password with someone outside their household would be covered in this new policy. The number of extras you can keep in your account, however, depends on your plan type. For instance, those with the $15.49/month Standard plan can keep one extra user for an additional $7.99/month. The Premium plan, meanwhile, can keep up to two people for $7.99/month per person. On the other hand, if you are on the Basic and Standard with Ads plans, there is no option to add any extra.

The US is not the only location affected by this change. Even UK customers must now pay £4.99/month for extra users. In February, Netflix also started testing it in other countries like Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain.

According to Netflix, paying for an extra member will only cover customers living within the same country. And although a different person is paying for the account of the additional members, they will have their own passwords and profile, albeit they can’t create extra or Kid’s profiles. In its announcement, the company also shared how it determines the accounts sharing passwords with others outside their homes.

“We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is part of your Netflix Household,” detailed Netflix. “We do not collect GPS data to try to determine the precise physical location of your devices. If a Netflix Household hasn’t been set, we will automatically set one for you based on IP address, device IDs, and account activity.”

The AI image generator Firefly is coming to Photoshop soon. According to Adobe, fans can expect the Generative Fill in “the second half of 2023.” Once available, it should allow users to use AI to add elements to their images and even expand the background of cropped photos. 

“By integrating Firefly directly into workflows as a creative co-pilot, Adobe is accelerating ideation, exploration and production for all of our customers,” said Senior Vice President of Adobe’s Digital Media Ashley Still. “Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and precision of Photoshop, empowering customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations.”

The Generative Fill feature will use Adobe’s AI image generator Firefly, which was first introduced in web beta in March. Its ability is incredibly promising as it simplifies the work of editing images through text prompts. And as its name implies, it can fill an original image with newly generated images or elements. Even more, it can expand the borders of the pictures. For instance, if you have an awkwardly cropped image, Generative Fill can fill in the missing parts. You can either allow it to work by itself or provide some prompts to guide it.

Nonetheless, the Generative Fill is still far from perfect and keen-eyed folks might still find the generated elements. Yet, the Firefly-powered feature certainly applies the points Photoshop users observe when editing images manually. For example, in the before and after pictures provided by Adobe, it was able to include reflection and shadows to make the generated elements more realistic. It also followed the level of blurriness of the background to make the filling process seamless.

Meta finally has a buyer for Giphy that the UK watchdog is forcing it to sell. However, the sale of the Giphy business to Shutterstock is depressing for the Facebook parent company as it will only pass it for only $53 million despite purchasing it for $400 in 2020.

Seven months ago, Meta received bad news from United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority, forcing it to divest Giphy due to competition concerns claiming that it could improperly boost Meta’s market power. Now, Shutterstock announced that it is buying Giphy, but not anywhere near the amount it was originally purchased by Meta. The company’s reported $53 million current purchase amount is a huge discount compared to how much Meta paid for it in 2020. Even more, it is not even half of Giphy’s 2016 $600 million valuation. No other reasons are known to explain this huge price slash, but it is undeniably a huge blow for Meta.

On the other hand, despite this huge price decrease, the acquisition won’t deliver an abrupt success for Shutterstock. As per the company, “GIPHY is expected to add minimal revenue in 2023 with focused monetization efforts taking place over the course of 2024.” Nonetheless, Shutterstock plans to use the buyout to beef up its offerings by including GIFs in the future. In its announcement, the company detailed the strategic and financial highlights of the deal, including extending its API ecosystem to include GIPHYs and using it to augment its generative AI and metadata strategy.

Cyberattacks are getting more and more rampant today, especially now that more and more sectors and institutions are becoming increasingly reliant on technology. A cyberattack is any intentional effort to alter, destroy, disable, expose, or steal data, applications, or other assets through unauthorized access to a computer system, digital device, or network. Interestingly enough, among the most common victims of cyberattacks nowadays are schools. 

According to statistics published by IT products and services provider AAG IT Services, almost a billion emails were exposed in a single year, affecting one in five Internet users. Data breaches cost businesses an average of $4.35 million in 2022. Furthermore, around 236.1 million ransomware attacks occurred worldwide during the first half of 2022.

In educational institutions, according to the results of a survey published on the website Dark Reading, almost a million pupils were impacted by 67 ransomware attacks against schools in 2021.

These data are alarming. So, technology corporations like Big Blue are investing to help combat these issues. 

IBM today announced in its official news release that it is providing in-kind grants worth $5 million to select schools in the United States and around the globe to help combat cyberattacks. 

“Time and time again, attackers go after the education sector, yet many of these institutions remain constrained in their security resources,” said Andy Piazza, IBM Security X-Force’s Global Head of Threat Intelligence.

The grants are under the IBM Education Security Preparedness Grants program, which is already in its third year now. It was created in 2021 and, since then, has expanded globally. But this year, it will be different. The program will include improved offerings from IBM SkillsBuild on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity topics. 

IBM SkillsBuild is the company’s free education program that is focused on serving underrepresented communities to help adult learners, high school and university students, and teachers develop valuable new skills and access promising career opportunities. 

“To date, this program has helped more than 350,000 students across schools in the US and abroad, with IBM Service Corps helping them recover from ransomware attacks, strengthen their security posture against future attacks, and prevent further disruption,” Piazza added. 

To qualify for the grant, schools will have to apply. Applications for schools are now open worldwide. Grants valued at $500,000 each, totaling $5 million, will be awarded to six school districts in the United States and four internationally. Through IBM Service Corps, volunteers will utilize their professional skills to help these academic institutions establish programs to help combat cyberattacks. 

“The global skills gap across cybersecurity and AI is a growing challenge that demands immediate attention,” stated IBM Chief Impact Officer Justina Nixon-Saintil.
