Intel Determined To Keep Up In The Intensifying AI Race – Intel News

The artificial intelligence (AI) race is getting tighter and tighter as the days go by. You have the success of the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, AI tools that an increasing number of people are continuously using. Then, you’ve got companies like NVIDIA creating chips intended for AI and AMD creating GPUs.

But some technology companies, even those prominent ones, seem to be struggling to keep up in the intensifying AI race – such as Intel. 

Though Intel produces some graphics processing units (GPUs), experts say these GPUs are still rudimentary. Furthermore, you may also be familiar with its Ponte Vecchio chip suffering years of delays, a reason the company doubled down on enhancing its CPU technology. Intel’s Ponte Vecchio GPU utilizes Generation 12.5 architecture and is created using a 10 nm production process in the company. 

However, Intel is determined to keep up in this tightening AI race. The pressure is on for this leading technology company, and it is willing to make an effort also to win the race, such as what it unveiled recently at the ISC High Performance Conference in Hamburg, Germany. 

During the conference, Intel announced its supercomputing chip roadmap for the next three years, outlined some of its products bound to compete against AMD and NVIDIA, and provided some details about a chip optimized for AI computing that it plans to introduce this 2025. The competition

Today, two of the market leaders and prominent leaders when it comes to products intended for AI are NVIDIA and AMD. For one, NVIDIA’s technology for GPUs has helped it swiftly deliver relevant solutions and scale these up to keep up with the growing demand. 

AMD is a prominent player in the GPU market as well. Despite its focus on CPUs and accelerated processing units (APUs), it is still challenging Intel in the market for laptops and desktops. Also, in fact, AMD is slated to challenge NVIDIA with the MI300 chip. MI300 is a sizable chip with 14080 shading units, 880 texture mapping units, and 0 ROPs.

Intel’s Falcon Shores: Will this shift the AI race?

Intel’s shot at the AI race is probably the development of its own products dedicated to AI applications, namely Falcon Shores and the Aurora supercomputer. The company said it has nearly finished the Argonne National Lab’s Aurora supercomputer shipments based on its Ponte Vecchio.

Then, Intel also announced Falcon Shores, its next-generation Max Series GPU, which will provide customers the flexibility to implement system-level CPU and discrete GPU combinations for the demands of the future. 

“Intel is committed to serving the HPC and AI community with products that help customers and end-users make breakthrough discoveries faster,” Jeff McVeigh, Intel’s Super Compute Group corporate vice president and general manager, said.

OpenAI shares ‘ideas’ regarding AI regulation

AI is still in its early stages, but its development is fast. And while different tech companies are already embracing and injecting it into their products and services, no clear sets of regulations or standards can regulate them. OpenAI, one of the leading groups in the superintelligence industry, recently outlined its view on this and some ideas that might be considered a good start for lawmakers to consider.

In its blog post on Monday, OpenAI executives Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever expressed how OpenAI is supportive of AI regulation. The post compared AI to nuclear energy and synthetic biology as samples of creations that could benefit humanity despite possible risks. As such, the execs voiced how there should be some regulations that AI creators will be compelled to follow in order to “manage risk.”

The leaders also detailed three points that could guide AI companies in developing the tech: coordination, a governing body and standards, and the “technical capability to make a superintelligence safe.” Nonetheless, the three also added that the public should have a say regarding the matter.

“But the governance of the most powerful systems, as well as decisions regarding their deployment, must have strong public oversight,” the execs wrote. “We believe people around the world should democratically decide on the bounds and defaults for AI systems. We don’t yet know how to design such a mechanism, but we plan to experiment with its development. We continue to think that, within these wide bounds, individual users should have a lot of control over how the AI they use behaves.”

OpenAI’s views detailed in the post are not a surprise, given the company itself has always been vocal about AI regulation. During the Senate hearing on AI this month, Altman agreed about this. Yet, other private companies certainly have their own varying comments and beliefs about this, including Microsoft and Google, which didn’t send any official representatives to the hearing. Microsoft, which has been investing multi-billion dollars in OpenAI, even has its own ways of implementing it in its business. According to reports in March, the company removed its “ethics and society” team, with employees believing the decision was made to allow faster shipping of AI features to Microsoft products. Even more, different crimes using AI have already been reported. 

With this, the need for regulation and standards for AI development is certainly necessary. And with more businesses investing in AI, which could indicate a more AI-centered future, they are needed as soon as possible. However, this move needs more than just a supportive voice from one of the biggest AI leaders in the industry: it also needs proactive government and lawmaker efforts. Yet, looking at the present time, we’re still waiting for bills to be proposed to efficiently prevent potential AI-related dangers.

Dell Technologies World, the company’s flagship event, has kicked off, and this year’s edition is being hosted at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The event is the world’s premier tech conference where participants can learn, connect, and celebrate. It is here where a community of forward-thinkers and thought leaders gather to ideate new business solutions, and inspire people. 

And during the Dell Technologies World 2023 event, which started yesterday, the company’s executives unveiled new multicloud strategies designed to help businesses function and innovate quicker through enhanced management and mobility of their applications and data wherever they are. 

During the event’s keynote session on day one, Dell’s CEO Michael Dell and Co-COO Chuck Whitten unveiled three new cloud platforms being developed in partnership with Microsoft, Red Hat, and VMware, the Dell APEX portfolio. 

“Partnerships [have] been at the heart of our philosophy, and no partner has been on this journey longer with us than Microsoft. And today, we have a couple of really exciting announcements to turn the big idea of multicloud into real innovations for you,” Dell said during the event.

Dell APEX Cloud Platforms are a portfolio of fully integrated and turnkey systems that integrate Dell’s infrastructure, software, and cloud operating stacks to bring in consistent multicloud operations through extending cloud operating models to on-premises and edge environments. They will be available worldwide by the second half of this year. 

“Our customers continue to look for a simpler technology experience to easily manage and access their assets and applications with predictable costs and greater flexibility,” Whitten said. “That’s where Dell APEX comes in. Now, Dell APEX spans the breadth of our portfolio to give customers greater freedom for technology to support businesses as their needs dictate.” 

With the Dell APEX Cloud Platforms, workloads can be brought to the ideal location depending on the desired performance, costs, and security requirements with mobility of data across a common multicloud storage layer. Customers can then seamlessly move data between on-premises environments and Dell APEX Block Storage for Public Cloud deployments. Each system is created to boost IT and developer productivity by utilizing standard management tools, as well as software-driven automated deployment and lifecycle management.

The partners are looking forward to these new strategies. 

“I’m excited about this,” said Red Hat CEO Matt Hicks. 

Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said this new technology really takes all of Dell’s innovation and operational excellence.

WhatsApp Will Now Bug You So You Won’t Forget Your Backup’s Password – Meta News

WhatsApp is very secure to use, and one of the things that make it so is its end-to-end encrypted messaging support. This end-to-end encryption works when you chat with another person using the app. End-to-end encryption guarantees only you and the person you are chatting with can read or listen to what is sent, and nobody else, not even WhatsApp, can see them.

This end-to-end encrypted messaging support makes this instant messaging platform ideal for sharing sensitive data without worrying about third parties meddling through them. But there’s a catch. Your WhatsApp backups to the cloud were not encrypted, posing a risk to your security. Around two years ago, Meta resolved this, enabling WhatsApp backups to Google Drive, which a password could protect. 

“While end-to-end encrypted messages you send and receive are stored on your device, many people also want a way to back up their chats in case they lose their phone… We are making available an extra, optional layer of security to protect backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud with end-to-end encryption,” WhatsApp said during that time. “You can now secure your end-to-end encrypted backup with either a password of your choice or a 64-digit encryption key that only you know. Neither WhatsApp nor your backup service provider will be able to read your backups or access the key required to unlock it.”

However, just like any other password, you might forget this encrypted password if you do not change your phone regularly. So, to make sure you won’t forget this password, WhatsApp will now literally bug you, reminding you to enter that password. 

News on WABetaInfo reported on Monday that WhatsApp users are now being asked to enter their end-to-end encrypted backup’s password or 64-digit key after they updated to the app’s latest build. Also, users cannot use the application unless they enter the backup’s password or disable encrypted backups. 

“People can definitely [experiment] with an advanced layer of privacy by enabling end-to-end encrypted backups. However, some users have lost access to their encrypted backup because they couldn’t remember the password they had chosen,” WABetaInfo stated. “For this reason, WhatsApp developed a feature that allows the user to verify if the password is correct, and it is available after installing one of the latest versions of WhatsApp for iOS and Android.”

This new feature serves as a reminder to make sure you do not forget your encrypted backup password since if this happens, you will be locked out of your WhatsApp chat history for good, and neither Google nor Meta can help you with it. There’s also no “Forgot password” option for this, unlike in your other accounts.

But, if you have already forgotten your backup’s password and WhatsApp reminds you of this, you can use the “Turn Off Encrypted Backups” option. You can then re-enable the security feature with a brand-new 64-digit key or password if required.  However, you will already lose access to your previous encrypted chat history on WhatsApp. 

You are also recommended to use a great password manager for your end-to-end encrypted backup’s password. 

This new feature on WhatsApp is beneficial since people do not change their phones regularly and might have the tendency to forget the password at some point. 

Amazon One now works as age-verification scanner for bars

Amazon One’s palm-scanning technology has a huge potential as a versatile tool for businesses. As such, the multinational tech company has finally decided to use the identity service to verify customers’ ages in bars. According to Dilip Kumar, Vice President of AWS Applications, this should further boost convenience in business services and customer experience. 

“Verifying a customer’s age for every alcohol purchase is a known friction point for retailers, bars, and breweries,” Kumar wrote in the blog post this Monday. “It leads to longer transaction times and puts a strain on employee productivity. Amazon One’s age verification capability addresses these challenges and alleviates the burden—and time—of manual ID verification.”

Interested individuals can use the system by signing up for Amazon One and scanning their palms at different locations where the service is available. Thankfully, over a hundred Whole Foods Market stores, Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, and various third-party stores already use Amazon One, so there should be multiple options for customers to scan their palms.

According to Amazon, once the customer’s details are available in Amazon One, the bartender will be able to view a “21+” message and a selfie photo for a visual match when the customers scan their hands the first time at the bar. After identity confirmation, a second scan will be required to pay for the purchase.

The idea sounds impressive since conventional age verifications in bars will require employees to ask their customers to present their IDs, which is kind of inconvenient. Thankfully, Amazon One, as a contactless system, should get rid of this process. However, according to Amazon, the age identification feature will first be tested in Coors Field baseball stadium in Colorado, but added it “will be rolled out to additional establishments in the coming months.”

Soon, you’ll be able to use your Android device as a quick laptop alternative for your productivity tasks. In Android 14 Beta 2, a bunch of new keyboard shortcuts is added, which should allow you to perform quick commands and launch different apps in a second.

Google recently unveiled Android 14 Beta 2. Some of the several new features added to the Beta 2 include support for built-in and custom predictive back animations, secure full-screen Intent notifications, and better data safety information visibility. However, the most notable addition that will certainly excite Android fans is the list of new keyboard shortcuts native to the system.

To recall, older versions of Android only offer support for a few shortcuts. Nonetheless, as Android journalist Mishaal Rahman pointed out on Twitter, there is now a comprehensive list of keyboard shortcuts in the Physical keyboard section of Settings. And compared to previous versions of Android, more system shortcuts are now available. 

This is great news for people who frequently use Android devices for quick productivity work, from documents to web surfing and research. It should also further boost the image of such devices as ideal laptop alternatives for light work and programs. Of course, tablets and smaller Android devices will never replace laptops or PCs, but it is good to know Google is finding ways to make portable devices more useful with each update. 

Ford aims to better compete with Tesla via its future EV with next-gen architecture, new battery chemistry

Ford is determined to get to the same level as Tesla. Aside from its willingness to lose $3 billion this year just to boost its electric vehicle business, the company shared some news about its upcoming next-gen EV architecture for its next EV during its capital markets day this Monday.

According to the company, the creation would first benefit a sport utility vehicle capable of 350 miles of range. It is inspired by Ford’s Expedition SUV and will boast three rows. The main highlight of the vehicle lies in its battery, which will use Ford’s future EV architecture set to release in 2025.

In the announcement, the company shared that the tech will employ lithium iron phosphate chemistry, which should allow future Ford EV vehicles to have more efficient batteries. Specifically, the company promised this would result in a fast charging process and better durability. Even more, the company stressed that this should help it deliver more affordable EV lineups. 

Doug Field, chief advanced product development and technology officer, shared how promising the creation is by comparing the old chemistry tech to the upcoming one. According to Field, while the old chemistry only allows a 150kWh battery to produce 300 miles of range, the new one should deliver 350 miles of range from a 100kWh battery. The vehicle expected to use this new architecture will join Ford’s EV lineup, which includes the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning.

Ford hopes to boost its position in the EV industry in the future, especially now that it is next to Tesla as the biggest EV seller in the US market. To make it possible, the company increased the Mustang Mach-E production and even promised to make some price slashes for the vehicle to help its price better compete with Tesla offerings. This should cost Ford billions to lose, but the company is confident about this path, especially after it sold 10,866 EVs in Q1 of 2023, which translates to 41% growth year-over-year.

WhatsApp now allows editing of messages with 15-minute time limit

Meta announced that WhatsApp now allows editing of messages within a 15-minute time limit after sending them. The feature is neither first nor original from WhatsApp, but it should now prevent unnecessary typos and additional text message corrections.

One of the downsides of WhatsApp is its inability to edit messages. Nonetheless, if you are one of the frequent users of the communication app, this should now be over in the new update Meta is rolling out. In its recent blog post, the company shared that users now have the chance to correct any possible misspelled texts or words they will send within a limited timeframe. As per Meta, it is now rolling out and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

The new feature can be accessed by pressing and holding a particular message until the menu appears. After this, users will have the option to “Edit” the message. If selected and some parts of the message are altered, an “edited” tag will indicate the change. Nonetheless, it is important to note that no history will be shown.

“Edited messages will display ‘edited’ alongside them, so those you’re messaging are aware of the correction without showing edit history,” Meta wrote. “As with all personal messages, media and calls, your messages and the edits you make are protected by end-to-end encryption.”

This feature has been available to other apps and platforms for quite some time now, including Twitter, Telegram, Signal, and even iMessage via iOS 16. Yet, it is nice that Meta is finally adopting this useful feature to one of its messaging apps. No words on whether the feature is also coming to Messenger (which only allows the unsending of messages), but the idea of it coming to one of the oldest communication apps is interesting.

Bing beats Baidu as top desktop search engine in China

Bing is now the top desktop search engine host in China, according to the April 2023 data of StatCounter (via Neowin). This can be considered a huge milestone for Microsoft as its new rank allowed it to beat other Chine-based search engine companies, including the giant Baidu.

According to the data, there is a significant market share increase for Bing, which only received 25.87% in March but spiked to 36.14% in April. Baidu, meanwhile, went from 29.26% in March to 26.03% in April. Other search engine competitors in the chart include Sogou, Haosou, and Google.

The huge increase follows Microsoft’s effort to integrate AI into Bing and its search browser Edge. The combination of the two attracted the public’s attention and even managed to make huge tech companies consider Bing to be their default search engine. In April, reports about Samsung reportedly conducted an in-house review of the plan, but recent reports now say that the South Korean company reversed the decision and decided to keep its relationship with Google.

On the other hand, despite this success and its new alluring AI features, it is still not a full assurance that Bing will remain China’s main desktop search engine player. According to reports, Baidu and other Chinese firms are also now exploring AI, which might introduce ChatGPT-like models and bots in the future. Also, Bing remains weak in terms of its global market share in the search engine industry, which is still dominated by Google.

Bezek also listed Apple (AAPL), NVIDIA (NVDA), and GOOGL stocks as artificial intelligence (AI) stocks to buy before they skyrocket but singled out GOOGL stocks as the best tech stock to buy. 

The stock and AI 

Alphabet stock is merely flat over the previous 12 months, compared with the stocks of Apple and NVIDIA, but this is from the activities of investors. GOOGL stock was a little bit down before its recent rebound, and this is due to worries from investors that ChatGPT and other AI solutions may disrupt Google Search, so they drop GOOGL stock. 

But according to Bezek, investors looking at investing in GOOGL stock should not be unfazed. He says dropping Alphabet stock just because of other AI solutions is a “misguided line of thinking.” 

Bezek explained that, for one, the use cases between most queries from ChatGPT and Google are pretty distinct. Another point is that people may forget that Alphabet itself is a leader in other innovations, such as next-generation technologies that include quantum computing. 

Alphabet is also doing its job when it comes to AI. With the launch of the powerful ChatGPT, the company did not let itself be left behind. In fact, Alphabet launched its very own AI tool, called Bard, last March, which PVP Live also reported about. 

Today, Bard is more intelligent and accessible in English and many other languages almost worldwide. Google said it will also start implementing this AI tool into its wide range of applications. So, instead of worrying that Google’s AI is just second-rate, think about the fact that Alphabet can make huge profits from it. 

Moreover, GOOGL stock is selling at a mere 22 times forward earnings. Alphabet is likewise buying back enormous chunks of stock, providing support should tech stocks experience another correction again.
