As OpenAI tries to convince the world of its willingness to cooperate with regulators, company CEO Sam Altman stressed again that GPT-5 is still not in training.

Altman shared this during a conference hosted by India’s Economic Times. “We have a lot of work to do before we start that model,” Altman said. “We’re working on the new ideas that we think we need for it, but we are certainly not close to it to start.”

Altman’s confirmation follows his earlier statements turning down the idea of the start of GPT-5 training. The executive even underlined that the company might not do it for some time.

The decision was affected by the collective plea of different individuals, including Elon Musk, who requested “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”

The news should then invalidate previous rumors about the existence of GPT-5, with some claiming OpenAI was expecting it to achieve Artificial General Intelligence. This, however, will also affect Microsoft, which has been investing multi-billion dollars in OpenAI. To recall, the company is employing ChatGPT (GPT-4 as the latest model) on its search engine Bing and other products. Mikhail Parakhin, chief technology officer for Bing, even claimed in May that Bing could be updated with new models “maybe 3 times a year or so.” Unfortunately, given OpenAI’s firm decision not to start the GPT-5 training, one might need to take Parakhin’s promise with a pinch of salt for now.
