The Pokemon Company launched Project Eevee in the past, and this time around, it appears that the long-running franchise is celebrating another adorable Pokemon. In a recent announcement, Project Piplup has been launched in an effort to show appreciation to Sinnoh’s highly beloved starter Pokemon. This is most likely the company’s way of preparing fans for the release of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl, which will take place within the latter half of the year.
2021 is an exciting year for both the Pokemon franchise and its fans. Not only is it Pokemon’s 25th anniversary, the 4th generation of Pokemon games is also celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, namely Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl. This is why the announcement of the remakes was not only exciting, but was highly requested for many years prior.
Before the year ends, long-time fans will once again be able to visit the Sinnoh region when Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are released for the Nintendo Switch. Just like the original titles, players will have to choose between three starter Pokemon before starting their adventure—Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup.
Now, it appears that Pokemon has launched Project Piplup, not only celebrating the Sinnoh region of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but of Pokemon Legends: Arceus too, which is also coming to the Nintendo Switch.
This newest project reminds us of Project Eevee, which was celebrated back in 2018. Back then, a bunch of endearing promotional videos dedicated to Eevee were released, also highlighting the various events that were taking place in Japan.
Not only that, The Pokemon Company also released a variety of merchandise dedicated to the project, including an adorable Eevee plush that had the option to wear different Eeveelution hoodies, as well as Eeveelution and sleeping Eevee dolls. This project was launched much earlier than Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! In fact, Project Eevee played a significant role in generating hype for these two titles.
If we use Project Eevee as a basis, The Pokemon Company may do the same thing for Project Piplup. This latest limited-time project is on a mission to “spread the charm of Piplup,” ahead of the remakes’ release.
The official Project Piplup account also tweeted a photo of a Piplup plush toy, which possibly means that fans can expect a myriad of merchandise revolving around the fan-favorite starter.
Even though the various Pokemon Centers stationed across Japan celebrated their own respective promotional events for Project Eevee, the event itself never made it outside of Japan except for social media campaigns. As such, there’s a big chance that Project Piplup will be the same and that the official celebrations won’t reach the West.
At the time, most giveaways and limited-edition items were only made accessible to those fans who reside in Japan. So, fans outside of Japan should manage their expectation this time around to avoid disappointment. In any case, fans from the Western regions should still be able to enjoy Project Piplup through online videos and social media campaigns.
