Pokemon Sword and Shield Dynamax Adventures: Catch Legendaries In This New Mode

Players who want to catch every Legendary Pokemon available in Pokemon Sword and Shield needs to know about one major new feature coming in The Crown Tundra expansion – Dynamax Adventures.

Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Expansion Pass has a little in store for every fan thanks to locations to discover and new storylines to follow. However, make no mistake as in a lot of ways the improvements and additions provided by the two expansion chapters are mainly focused on avid Pokemon fans – providing those who have already overcome the Galar region even more post-game content.

The first expansion took Pokemon trainers inside the Isle of Armor and focused on training and battling features additions and upgrades. However, this month’s upcoming expansion, The Crown Tundra, will focus more on adventure and exploration – including the opportunity to catch numerous rare Pokemon not recently found in the region of Galar.

One of the major methods players will have to capture original Legendary Pokemon from other main regions and generations is through Dynamax Adventures. The new feature is a challenging coop multiplayer mode with Legendary and Mythical Pokemon usually featured as the ultimate reward.

While players can catch new and returning Legendaries in the main storyline of The Crown Tundra, to encounter a range of original Legendaries, they will need to access Dynamax Adventures. Avid Pokemon fans might be familiar with this since it is quite similar to the Wormholes in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

To join Dynamax Adventures, a team must be composed of four players cooperating inside a mini-dungeon where they take on Pokemon battles of increasing difficulty. All these battles will be in Dynamax mode, so players who are already joining Raids in the Wild Area will be familiar with the setup. Just like raiding a Pokemon Den, players can take on the dungeon by themselves with AI partners but it is recommended to do it with real people.

The task might sound pretty simple but within its mechanics, Dynamax Adventures apply a set of rules and effects which means there are no normal Pokemon battles. The rules and effects are:

  • Each player will be restricted to using only one Pokemon.
  • Players can’t use your own Pokemon – At the start of the challenge, players are given the chance to choose one from a set of randomly generated Pokemon.
  • HP, PP, and Status Effect will be carried over to the next battle.
  • After defeating a Dynamax Pokemon, players can swap their Pokemon.

The goal of the team is to work their way through the end of the dungeon. There are branching paths along the way, with which direction to take will be decided by player votes. If the team is lucky enough, they might encounter small random events inside which provide healing and other help but other than these, players are on their own.

The deeper the team reaches, the rarer Pokemon to defeat and catch. There is a guaranteed Legendary Pokemon at the end of the dungeon. After defeating the dungeon, players can choose to take home their current Pokemon or swap for the rare Pokemon at the end of the tunnel.

However, each player can only get each Legendary Pokemon once. Players who finish the Dynamax Adventure will also get rare items as rewards such as the new Ability Patch item which lets players swap their Pokemon’s regular ability for a rare Hidden Ability.
