Sephiroth From Final Fantasy 7 Revealed To Be The New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Fighter

The Game Awards 2020 took place today, and one of the surprises revealed in this event is the fact that the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Fighter happens to be Final Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth. The Nintendo of America Twitter account posted a teaser earlier saying that the award’s show will reveal a new DLC fighter for the crossover fighting video game.

Naturally, many fans dug up the many, already-existing theories concerning who the new character joining the roster might be. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released in 2018, and for most of its existence, fans have spent a good amount of time discussing possible theories as to who the next DLC fighter could be.

The recent addition was Steve from Minecraft, and while this announcement took the gaming community by storm, many fans weren’t all that surprised due to a previous leak that claimed that he would be added to the game. While players thought the leak was proven false by other DLC fighters that came before Steve, his addition refueled their belief in the leak.

As such, many theorized that the new DLC fighter would either be Ryu from Ninja Gaiden or Doom Slayer from Doom because both characters were included in the leak in question. However, the character that was announced during The Games Award this year truly took everyone by surprise.

The addition of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 was unexpected because he was never really rumored to appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate before. His reveal came with a trailer, where Sephiroth showed off his moves and quick swordplay while the character’s theme song played in the background. Not only that, the trailer featured his meteor ability as well, which looks rather incredible.

After the initial shock and excitement wore off, players are now discussing how Final Fantasy 7’s main antagonist fits in the overall gameplay system of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Adding new characters in any game is never easy, and most especially so for a fighting game like this one. After all, there’s always the possibility that the new character might be too overpowered.

At the moment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has done a great job at not following the footsteps of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, as its competitive scene fell apart at the hands of Cloud and Bayonetta. However, there’s always the possibility of the same thing happening to Smash Ultimate with each new character.

In any case, fans shouldn’t worry about that now. We haven’t experienced playing as the character yet, so he might turn out perfectly balanced after all. For now, we should all bask in this big moment — the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be welcoming Sephiroth as a DLC fighter is a big deal and should be cause for excitement within the Smash community.

Speaking of, the community has been through a lot the past couple of months, what with Nintendo shutting down the Super Smash Bros. tournament. As such, it’s great to just take a breather and enjoy this new content.
