Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Developer Discusses the Major Changes They’ve Made to the Missions

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is scheduled to launch this year, and it appears that the developers are trying to shake things up by making some changes to the formula that has made Call of Duty: Modern Warfare so popular today.

You will find the bigger changes on the multiplayer side of the title, such as the scorestreak system that fans have been avidly discussing, and the maps that feel larger.

However, with the help of Raven Software, the studio is hoping to make some major changes to the story side of the game by proposing new and unique ideas that will revitalize the traditional linear action.

Senior creative director Dan Vondrak recently discussed these changes in an interview, where he talks about their plans in greater detail. For Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, they want to strengthen their commitment in creating missions that are more open-ended.

Previously, the studio talked about side missions and how these will ultimately shape the narrative of the game as well as what kind of ending you’ll get. Now, Vondrak went ahead and confirmed an even more surprising element.

During missions, there’s now more to do than just gathering intel and clues so that you can access different areas of a side mission. Now, you also have to solve puzzles, although we don’t think this applies to each and every side mission.

Using the evidence you have gathered, you will be required to solve a puzzle in order for you to proceed to the other parts of the side mission you’re working on. If you fail to do so, certain missions will become inaccessible and as a result, will most likely affect the outcome of your game.

Asides from solving puzzles, Raven Software also has other attempts at deviating from the traditional campaign that players are expecting. For example, some instances in the game will require players to make dialogue choices.

Not only that, but you should just go ahead and expect open-ended missions that have more than one endings, and you will need to really think about the decisions you make in order for your game to progress.

Another exciting change can be found in some missions wherein Raven Software got rid of the standard faire linear action segments and instead, introduced assassination missions. In this case, players will be able to sneak into the base or the building of an enemy where they have to try and kill a specific target.

It will be completely up to you how you wish to accomplish this mission, as you will have plenty of options to choose from like how it was back then with IO Interactive’s Hitman titles.

Raven Software hopes that with these changes and additions to how missions are played in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, players will find the campaign to be replayable and entertaining, comparable to that of the Warzone modes that fans keep coming back to.

Other exciting announcements have been revealed for the upcoming title as well, such as multiplayer mode, Zombies, and the very popular Warzone battle royale mode.
