Triangle Strategy, a new tactical RPG being created by the team behind Square-2D Enix’s RPG Octopath Traveler, was announced to fans of Square-2D Enix’s RPG Octopath Traveler earlier this year. The Final Fantasy Tactics-inspired RPG launched with a demo that was distributed at the announcement, and the game has gotten multiple trailers since its February introduction. The latest teaser for the game highlights some of the diverse cast of characters who will appear in the strategic game.
Octopath Traveler was a critical and economic success when it was launched in March of 2018. Within six months of its debut, the RPG with branching stories sold over a million copies and was nominated for multiple awards, winning three of them from Japanese gaming newspaper Famitsu.
Following the success of Octopath, Square Enix revealed Triangle Strategy as a spiritual sequel, with the game turning to a tactical RPG in the vein of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. Fans have now had their first glimpse of several of Triangle Strategy’s significant cast members.
The trailer, dubbed “Challenge Your Convictions,” introduces some key characters from Glenbrook, Aesfrost, and Hyzante, the game’s three nations. Fans are introduced to certain members of the three regions’ monarchy, including Glenbrook’s prince Roland and the Kingdom’s strategist Benedict, in addition to the game’s male and female leads in Serenoa and Frederica.
The teaser also features a number of supporting characters from the game’s warring nations, including spy Anna Pascal, Glenbrook’s kingsguard Hughette Bucklar, and others. Many of these characters were first introduced to players in Triangle Strategy’s early demo.
The trailer also shows off some of Triangle Strategy’s most essential elements, along with the character introductions. The game’s “HD-2D” graphics technology has been upgraded from Octopath Traveler and is now classified as version 1.1.
Triangle Strategy will follow the same branching plot as its predecessor, with player choices affecting the story’s evolution. It’s unclear how important character decisions will be in the overarching plot of the game. Still, the teaser depicts moments like a character casting “Sunfall” and potentially modifying settings as a result of their actions.
Triangle Strategy will have large shoes to fill if it wants to follow in the footsteps of Octopath Traveler’s massive success. Octopath Traveler was an instant smash with RPG players, with 2.5 million copies sold earlier this year, with many fans praising the game’s battle system and character advancement. Triangle Strategy, which promises great character development similar to its predecessor, will try to be the next big strategy game on the Switch when it launches next year.
