After backlash due to the use of artificial intelligence in its articles, the news media website CNET released its AI policy detailing where it will and won’t use the tech.

To recall, CNET was lambasted in January after it was revealed that it used AI on some of its stories. The criticism further increased due to the factual errors included in the articles, which the company updated and corrected. Overall, CNET edited half of the 70 articles it released with the aid of its in-house AI system called Responsible AI Machine Partner or RAMP.

Needless to say, the incident greatly impacted the image of the news media website, but it is now ensuring its audience about the future use of AI in its works. In its AI policy, CNET stressed that “none of the stories on CNET have been or will be completely written by an AI.” According to the company, it is also not using or will never use RAMP for its product testing or reviews, as human experts are the ones handling them. However, CNET seems to express the intention of using AI to generate future images. In the latter part of its AI policy page, the company shared that “as of now,” it is not using the tech for such a purpose but added that its “staff photographers and video producers are evaluating approaches and best practices regarding the use of the generative AI to create images and videos.” Moreover, the company didn’t shy away from sharing that it will continuously test AI tools.

In the end, CNET promised to be more transparent in the use of AI in its future stories and works. “On any stories or pages that feature text that originated from our AI tool, we’ll include that information in a disclosure — typically, in a secondary byline at the top of the story,” the policy reads. “On any story that deals substantively with the topic of artificial intelligence, whether or not we used the technology in the creation of that story, we’ll include a disclosure about our organization’s use of AI that links to this page.”

The Australian arm of Dell Inc. has been found guilty of duping customers with fake discounts on add-on monitors that customers could include as a bundle with computers. Dell Australia has also admitted to the wrongdoing and will refund over 4,250 customers in the country, news from Reuters reported. 

Dell Australia dupes customers

The Federal Court of Australia issued a decision declaring by consent that Dell Australia misled consumers on discount bundles such as what has been mentioned earlier. 

“We brought these proceedings because we were concerned that Dell Australia had misled its consumers with false representations about its pricing and discounts,” ACCC Commissioner Liza Carver said. “In some cases, consumers paid more for the add-on monitor advertised as ‘discounted’ than they would have paid if they had bought it as a stand-alone product, which is shocking.”

ACCC stands for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. It is the chief competition regulator of the Australian government and is under the country’s Treasury Department. 

Dell Australia offered over 5,300 add-on monitors sold as a bundle with overstated and fake discounts. Consumers could add these monitors to their purchases of Dell computers.

“As the Court noted, price and discounts are key differentiating factors for consumers deciding between product offers, and this case reinforces the importance of retailers displaying genuine ‘was/now’ pricing and accurate savings,” Carver further pointed out. 

Dell admits wrongdoing

The case against Dell Australia for allegedly making misleading or false representations on the prices of monitors part of the purchase bundle has been running since November of last year. The period of the purchases was from at least August 2019 to December 16th, 2021. 

During that time when the case was first brought up, Dell’s Australian arm was accused of making false or misleading representations on the prices of these monitors, as well as the savings consumers can get when they purchase them with a computer. Often, the monitor was allegedly shown with a higher price struck through, denoting a considerable saving the customer could get. 

Now, the technology company admitted those monitors were not sold for the original price struck through, with the add-on price even more expensive than if a customer bought the monitor separately. 

Dell Australia also admitted it made misleading statements on the discounted prices, particularly the usage of the terms “Total Savings,” “Discounted Price,” “Get the best price for popular accessories when purchased with this product,” and “Includes x percent off.”

“This case serves as an important reminder to businesses that suggestive upselling or bunding of products must not mislead consumers as to the deal they are getting,” the ACCC Commissioner added.

Penalties will be heard at a later date.

A rivalry is heating up

Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, have actually spent the last several years sparring over digital advertising and Internet privacy.

But none of these have been as intense as what is happening right now. If Meta and Apple’s rivalry were to have a battleground, the two have found a new ground. That is, headsets. 

Apple is currently conducting its WWDC 2023 right now until June 9th, where the biggest announcement that every technology enthusiast is looking forward to hearing is Apple’s brand-new headset, the Vision Pro, among other revelations. Well, with this big announcement, Meta must be shaking with fear. 

But perhaps not. A few days before Apple’s WWDC event started, Meta unveiled its own headset, the Meta Quest 3, meant to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. 

With both headsets now revealed, Facebook’s parent and the iPhone maker are now firmly on equal grounds. 

Both companies are blatant in investing in devices that allow people to enter a virtual world and interact with digital objects in 3D. Zuckerberg calls it the “metaverse,” while Cook calls it “spatial computing.” 

An Apple win?; Disney exits the metaverse

With the capabilities of each of the two’s headsets, it is hard to determine a winner. But certain aspects can lead one to deduce that Apple may be ahead. Read on. 

First, unlike Apple or even Google’s parent, Alphabet, Meta does not control an operating system like iOS. This has given Apple a decisive advantage, generating billions of dollars from its app store and allowing them to dictate the rules third-party developers, Facebook included, must adhere to. 

Second, Disney’s exit from the metaverse. CNBC previously reported that Disney had killed its metaverse department under Bob Iger’s leadership, who came back to the company in 2022. 

Also, during the WWDC event on Monday, the first day, Iger took the stage, revealing that Disney’s streaming service would be available for Apple’s new headset. 

However, some Disney content is still available on Meta’s Quest devices. 

Meta Quest 3 vs. Apple Vision Pro

So, what are the main differences between Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro? Let’s start with Meta’s. 

Meta Quest 3 is a mixed reality headset that uses Meta Reality technology but also supports virtual reality, so users can have this for both games and apps.  

Its features include higher resolution, more robust performance, breakthrough technology, and a slimmer and more comfortable headset. 

Plus, it has also been revealed that Meta Quest 3 will host over 20 games, such as “Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord,” “Dungeons of Eternity,” and “Assassin’s Creed: Nexus VR.”

On the other hand, Apple Vision Pro is described by the company as a “revolutionary spatial computer” that seamlessly merges digital content with the real world while allowing its users to still stay present and connect with others. 

Some of its features are an ultra-high resolution display system and a custom Apple silicon in a unique dual-chip design, among others. 

But perhaps the biggest dealbreaker is their price. Apple Vision Pro costs $3,499, while Meta Quest 3 only costs $499.99.

What to know about the new Apple Vision Pro headset

Apple has finally unveiled its Vision Pro headset after years of development. At the WWDC 2023, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced the new device which falls more on the augmented reality than the virtual side of headsets. Unfortunately, Vision Pro will cost you a fortune, as it will sell at $3,499 when it releases in early 2024.

Vision Pro has a strand that users can use to secure it in place, and there are audio pods on both sides for spatial audio, allowing the wearer to hear sounds like they are coming everywhere. Aside from audio, the main highlight of Vision Pro is its visuals, which will be powered by a standard M2 chip paired with a new R1 chip. The curved glass homes the micro-OLED display and three-element lens with the ability to cater to custom prescription glass inserts, thanks to Apple’s partnership with Zeiss.

Overall, the Vision Pro will offer 23 million pixels spread across its two panels. This translates to more than 4K for each eye. Apple shared some pictures during the event, but note that they were all rendered. That means the only way you could actually see how efficient Vision Pro’s displays are is by going into the Apple Store for a demo.

On the other hand, Vision Pro doesn’t have a built-in battery but will instead rely on a battery pack, which will be connected via a wire in the rear of the device. This will only last for two hours, however. Thankfully, there’s also an option to plug the device into the wall directly.

The device will employ Apple’s new visionOS, which the company described as something “designed from the ground up” to cater to spatial computing. According to Apple, the same frameworks available in iPadOS and iOS are injected into visionOS, which should allow iPad and iPhone apps to run on the Apple Vision Pro. What makes the app experience different in visionOS, however, is the system’s ability to make the digital content blend well with the physical world. Apple said that is possible through the operating system’s three-dimensional interface and ability to respond dynamically to natural light and cast shadows. Moreover, the Vision Pro comes with a new input system, which allows control using one’s eyes, hands, and voice. As per Apple, “high-speed cameras and a ring of LEDs that project invisible light patterns onto the user’s eyes” will aid the system in allowing these controls. Specifically, Apple shared that the device has 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones to make it possible. 

At first glance, the Apple Vision Pro headset appears to be futuristic ski goggles with an aluminum frame and smooth front glass. Interestingly, while the device looks like something that will allow you to see through the display, it uses the so-called EyeSight feature. This makes an initial scan of your face, so your eyes will be projected on the external display as if you are wearing transparent glass.

Unfortunately, while Vision Pro looks promising, it seems Apple wants to push it as a work-focused device instead of a gaming headset. Nonetheless, it is important to note that Apple offers different modes in the device, including gaming mode, albeit it will only be in the form of a large screen projection instead of VR. Another mode to try is the movie theater, which sounds exciting, given that each eye is over 4K. With this, it is no longer a surprise that during the event, Apple confirmed that Disney+ would be available on the device at launch. 

On the other hand, as part of Apple’s ambition to seemingly make it a work device, the company announced that Microsoft Word, Excel, and Teams are coming to the headset. Others include WebEX, Zoom, and Adobe Lightroom. There will also be a new App Store designed specifically for Vision Pro, and Apple said it would offer more than 100 Apple Arcade titles on “day one.” FaceTime will also be brought to Vision Pro, Apple promised.

FaceID is also getting a new version of the headset. Called Optic ID, the new secure authentication system will analyze the user’s iris via LED light exposure and compare it to the enrolled one on the Secure Enclave. Apple also stressed that the user’s Optic ID data is encrypted and local.

These features and specs make Apple Vision Pro incredibly enticing, but, then again, it is not cheap. It even exceeded the $3,000 price reported prior to the official unveiling of the headset. Yet, it should not be a surprise, given Apple’s reputation in pricing its device lineups. Also, as mentioned above, the headset seems to be dedicated to professionals and enterprises instead of individuals looking for a headset for casual gaming. On a positive note, the “Pro” tag is probably an indication that Apple might release other versions of the headset in the future, though it is hard to say how “affordable” it would be.
