Do you drive a car and like listening to in-car AM radio from time to time? If you do, you might not like this news about electric car brands dropping AM radio. 

Tesla has recently decided to drop the AM radio in its newer car models. 

But Tesla is not the only car brand to come to this decision. BMW, Mazda, Volkswagen, Volvo, Polestar, and Rivian have already removed radios from their electric vehicles. 

This phasing out of AM radio comes after what these car brands believe to be a decreasing number of drivers tuning in to the radio. This is also because of the availability of more advanced technologies, such as built-in Bluetooth, music streaming, and online radio stations. 

Ford also recently reported findings presenting that less than five percent of in-car listening was done on the radio. 

But other surveys say otherwise. There is a Nielsen survey for fall 2022 that shows 82 million Americans still listen to AM radio monthly.  

Lawmakers and broadcasters are ready to fight back against this move, which they call a “betrayal.”

Broadcasters, particularly, say AM radio deserves protection since it is a linchpin of emergency information systems in the United States. Plus, they say AM radio remains vital on a daily basis for millions of listeners, including rural, foreign-language, and religious audiences.

“When the power goes out and cell networks are down, the car radio is often the only way for people to get information, sometimes for days at a time,” said Jerry Chapman, president of Woof Boom Radio, in a testimony for a U.S. House hearing yesterday. Woof Boom Radio has three AM stations in Ohio and Indiana. 

Furthermore, dozens of House members have also signed onto the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, a bill that will require all new car and truck models to receive AM broadcast signals. 

“Removing AM radio receivers from vehicles means individuals may miss out on critical lifesaving updates. We must ensure that no community’s left behind, no voice is silenced and no emergency response is compromised,” Ohio representative Bob Batta, who also heads the communications panel conducting the hearing said.

Renowned senator, Ted Cruz, who is a Texas Republican also spoke about the issue. He tweeted that AM radio should be kept in cars.

“AM radio is worth keeping in our cars. It’s central to our democracy and freedom of expression,” Cruz said in his tweet. 

More so, Michael Harrison, Talkers Magazine, said the scrapping of AM radio in cars is “almost betrayal.” 

“Radio has exalted the automobile as being mythical, and gorgeous. It’s almost a betrayal on the part of these car manufacturers to say, we’re getting rid of AM radio,” Harrison said in an interview.

Linda Yaccarino, former chairman of advertising and partnerships group at NBCUniversal, has started her new position as the Twitter CEO. In her recent tweet, the new Twitter executive even expressed support for Elon Musk’s push for freedom of speech on the platform, calling it “priceless.”

The news about Yaccarino being the company’s new CEO started in May when Musk shared on the platform that he “hired a new CEO for X/Twitter.” No name was spilled then, but the Tesla CEO noted that “she” would take the role in six weeks. Yaccarino, however, entered the company earlier than expected after resigning as an executive of NBCUniversal.

During Musk’s earlier tease about the new Twitter exec, he shared that after hiring a new CEO, he “will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.” Yaccarino, meanwhile, is expected to focus on Twitter’s business side.

According to a previous report from The Verge, Yaccarino is the perfect candidate for the position as she “has been angling for the job and telling friends she wants it,” adding “she and Musk also see eye to eye politically.” The new CEO is already proving it by tweeting a message supporting Musk’s view involving free speech.

“Tonight’s reflection — we just heard a rare and unscripted conversation, on a range of important topics, with a Presidential candidate — all launched on Twitter,” Yaccarino tweeted in response to Musk’s Twitter Space session with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. “That’s historical. Let’s do more. Freedom of speech is priceless.”

Yaccarino’s tweet might suggest full support for Musk’s unconventional view on freedom of speech, which started concerns among experts. To recall, advertisers fled the platform after Musk’s takeover caused concerns involving the promotion of harmful content. A recent study even suggests that the company might be prioritizing its Blue subscribers by not removing their hateful posts despite the policy it is supposed to be observing. Musk also hosted Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Twitter on Monday despite being a vocal anti-vaccine conspiracist. During the event, Kennedy made a claim about pharmaceutical drugs being responsible for mass shootings.

TikTok expands Series paywall feature

TikTok announced an update in its Series subscription feature, saying it is now expanding it to more creators.

TikTok has always been an ideal platform for creators to endorse their brands and products and make partnerships with businesses and companies. However, the ByteDance-owned company wants to offer more ways its users can earn on its platform by opening its Series feature.

Series started in March, but its initial release was limited to a few creators. Nonetheless, this expansion will bring the feature to more users “in select regions” who meet certain requirements, including a certain minimum number of followers.

“Beginning June 6, 2023, creators in select regions who are 18 years or older, have an account that is at least 30 days old with at least 10K followers, have posted more than three public videos in the last 30 days, and have at least 1K authentic video views in the last 30 days, are eligible to join Series,” TikTok wrote in its updated document. “Creators with less than 10K followers but meet the above requirements can apply by providing a link to premium content they’ve previously sold on other platforms via the Creator Center in the TikTok app. Application does not guarantee access.”

The paywall feature is similar to what other platforms offer, wherein followers must pay to access exclusive content from certain creators. In Series, creators can charge between $1 and $190. According to TikTok, creators can include up to 80 videos in a single Series, with each video up to 20 minutes long.

However, while the expansion is good news for creators hoping to try Series, TikTok’s support document still indicates the feature is still “currently available to select eligible creators by invitation only.” No other information about the specific countries or regions where the feature is being expanded is included. Moreover, it is important to note that while creators have the liberty to determine the pricing of their exclusive Series content, TikTok will make deductions to the creator’s earnings. According to TikTok’s document, some of these deductions could include processing fees by app stores, service fees being charged to TikTok viewers, applicable taxes, and refunds paid to viewers.

A new leak shows Instagram is working on its own AI chatbot, which will allow users to ask questions and request advice. In short, it will work like ChatGPT.

App researcher and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi shared the news on Twitter, posting some screenshots of the bot’s prompt. According to the post, the chat experience, described as “something like ChatGPT,” can be summoned using the @ shortcut feature. In the screenshot, the bot’s shortcut can be read as “@ai_meta.” It is unknown, however, if this will be the official name of the chatbot. 

Additionally, Paluzzi stressed that the Instagram bot would offer 30 different personalities. There are no other details on what these personalities would be, but comparing it to past reports about AI personalities on ChatGPT-powered Bing might mean distinct tone settings for the bot.

Interestingly, the AI prompt says the bot will allow you to “find the best way to express yourself and get help writing messages.” This might be a clear indication of an assistive feature of the bot, which is not new among AI nowadays. The same capability is already present in Edge’s AI-powered sidebar, and Microsoft recently brought it to its SwiftKey mobile phone keyboard.

While the news about this Instagram bot is interesting, reports about Meta exploring AI are no longer new. To recall, the Instagram parent company introduced new AI tools weeks ago. The gifts of quantum technology are presently being used across various sectors worldwide, such as in secure communication, healthcare, disaster management through better predictions, imaging, and so much more. The demand for quantum technology only calls for more data centers to house it.

On Tuesday, the Big Blue unveiled its plans to open its first-ever quantum data center in Europe. According to IBM, this data center will open this 2024 in Ehningen town in Germany, providing businesses, government offices, and research institutions with access to quantum computing. 

This first quantum data center in Europe is also expected to offer several IBM quantum systems equipped with utility-scale quantum processors. It will be situated at IBM’s facility in the German town and will serve as the company’s cloud region in Europe after its quantum data center in New York. 

“Europe has some of the world’s most advanced users of quantum computers, and interest is only accelerating with the era of utility-scale quantum processors,” said IBM Quantum vice president Jay Gambetta. 

Gambetta added that this quantum data center and associated cloud region will give those people in the continent a brand-new option as they look into tapping the capabilities of quantum computing “to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.”

This is not the first time though the company made a move concerning quantum computing. One of its initiatives for the technology was unveiled last month when it announced a decade-long $100 million partnership with the University of Chicago and the University of Tokyo to build a supercomputer centered upon quantum technology and powered by 100,000 qubits.  

With that partnership, IBM will work over the next 10 years to advance the underlying innovations for this system, and design and construct the necessary components at scale. 

Arvind Krishna, IBM’s CEO, spoke about this matter. He said,  “Over the past several years, IBM has been at the forefront of introducing quantum technology to the world. We have achieved significant progress along our roadmap and mission to globally establish useful quantum technology, so much so that we can now, with our partners, truly begin to explore and develop a new class of supercomputing anchored by quantum.”

Currently, IBM’s Quantum Network has over 60 organizations across Europe accessing quantum hardware and software via the cloud. These organizations include Bosch, Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, T-Systems, and more.

“Our quantum data center in Europe is an integral piece of our global endeavor,” IBM’s general manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Ana Paula Assis, stated. “It will provide new opportunities for our clients to collaborate side-by-side with our scientists in Europe, as well as their own clients, as they explore how best to apply quantum in their industry.”

Chips and processors manufacturer Intel is selling 35 million Class A common stock shares, or approximately $1.5 billion stake, in Mobileye, a self-driving tech developer. Plus, Intel has also unveiled new graphics processing units (GPUs), the Intel Arc Pro A60 and Pro A60M. 

$1.5 billion stake being sold

According to a news story on Reuters, Intel is currently selling 35 million shares worth around $1.5 billion in Mobileye via a secondary public offering, according to Monday’s regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. 

Mobileye, doing business as Mobileye Global Inc., is an Israel-based company that develops self-driving technologies and advanced driver-assistance systems. These comprise computer chips, software, and cameras.

The company has one of the most extensive fleets of self-driving vehicles in testing worldwide, including in New York City, Munich in Germany, Tokyo in Japan, and Paris in France. Some of its clients are Volkswagen, Nissan, and BMW. To date, over 140 million vehicles across the globe have been built using technologies from Mobileye. 

It was in 1999 when Mobileye was founded to lower vehicle-related injuries and fatalities. In 2007, the self-driving tech developer received a $130 million investment from Goldman Sachs. In 2014, it listed shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

Intel has been the parent company of Mobileye. Intel acquired Mobileye in 2017 for more than $15 billion. 

This sale came after the self-driving tech developer debuted on Wall Street last October, raising some $860 million in an initial public offering that valued this Intel unit at more than $21 billion. Since this IPO, Mobileye shares have more than doubled, giving it a market cap of nearly $34 billion. 

With this sale, Intel is expecting its finances to boost further and to be able to keep up with the intensifying artificial intelligence (AI) race. 

Intel’s new GPUs

Yesterday, Intel introduced new members of its Arc Pro A-series GPUs, namely the Intel Arc Pro A60 and Pro A60M. These GPUs are carefully designed for professional workstation users with up to 12GB video memory, and to support four displays with high dynamic range and Dolby Vision.

“With built-in ray tracing hardware, graphics acceleration and machine learning capabilities, the Intel Arc Pro A60 GPU unites fluid viewports, the latest in visual technologies and rich content creation in a traditional single slot factor,” Intel said. 

Compared to its current Intel Arc Pro products, these GPUs offer double the number of PCIe lanes with 16, double the dedicated AI Xe Matrix Extensions engines with 256, double the number of ray tracing units with 16, and double the memory bandwidth at 384 gigabytes per second. 

These features, along with full media encode and decode support, make these GPUs perfect for computer-assisted design and modeling, AI inference tasks, and media processing in dedicated enterprise environments.
