This news might be a far-fetched idea, but Apple is all out for it. According to the tech giant’s recent patent application published on Thursday, it may create future iPhone screens sporting displays that can unroll like parchments. Sounds interesting? Read on.

Curious about how it will work? Here’s the scoop. 

“An electronic device may have a flexible display. The electronic device may have housing portions that are rotatably coupled to each other so that the flexible display may fold along one or more bend axes,” the 21-page patent application from Apple read. “A device may have rollers that store a flexible display and that help deploy the display from within a housing when additional display area is desired.”

Apple’s patent application, titled “Electronic Device With Flexible Display Structures,” also recognized how displays are often made from rigid structures like glass substrates, making it challenging to form devices with such features, that is, rolling out like parchment. 

However, the company plans to address this by wrapping the flexible display around one or more rollers. 

“In a stored position, the flexible display may be wrapped around a storage roller,” the patent application went on. “Optional deployment rollers may be used to help deploy the display as the display is pulled out of the housing.”

The company also said this feature could be used for a mobile phone, a tablet computer, and even a wristwatch device. 

The patent application added that the phones with this feature could be made from metal, plastic, or other suitable materials. 

But don’t get too excited about this yet. This new patent application from Apple is just one of the thousands of patents the company applies for in a year. However, Apple also gets many patents granted every year, so this plan may be possible too.

Meanwhile, in other iPhone news, security researchers revealed that the release of iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 last patches vulnerabilities and threats that can expose users to a new kind of attack, that which attackers gain access to the kernel. 

This recent vulnerability, known as ColdInvite (CVE-2023-27930), comes after the previously resolved vulnerability called ColdIntro (CVE-2022-32894). However, both these vulnerabilities enable attacks to get away from the secure “isolate environment” of a coprocessor or chips that help the central processor accomplish tasks more quickly. 

These attackers can then use these chips to access the iPhone’s kernel. The kernel is a vital part of the device’s operating system. We just have to wait until this vulnerability is mitigated.

Samsung has recently unveiled its new Sensor OLED Display that has the power to recognize fingerprints anywhere on a screen and even check your blood pressure. The unveiling happened at SID Display Week 2023 in Los Angeles, which started on May 21st and is concluding this May 26th. 

The new Samsung Sensor OLED Display can measure a person’s heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels simply with the touch of two fingers. So, you can use this device while watching a horror movie to find out if the film is too scary for you if your blood pressure begins to spike up. 

Prevent heart attack

“To accurately measure a person’s blood pressure, it is necessary to measure to blood pressure of both arms,“ Samsung’s official promo for the Society for Information Display’s (SID) Display Week 2023 stated. “The Sensor OLED display can simultaneously sense the fingers of both hands, providing more accurate health information than existing wearable devices.”

The Samsung Sensor OLED Display recreates the traditional fingerprint sensors built for tablets and smartphones. This is because the device is part of the screen instead of being a stand-alone component.  

Here’s how it works. The display embeds a light-sensing organic photodiode (OPD) into the panel of the screen. You can thus use it to measure your heart rate, stress level, and blood pressure. Do the measurement simply by placing two fingers on the designated slot. Then, wait for the device to collect your vital signs. The OLED light reflects differently based on the relaxation and contraction of your fingers’ blood vessels. 

The device’s OPD then recognizes these changes and converts these into health information. The Sensor OLED Display is so far the first to utilize panel technology that has the capability to sense fingerprints and biometric data at the same time. 

It can therefore help a lot if a person is suffering from a heart condition and watching a horror movie. They can place their fingers on the device while watching the flick to warn them if their heart rate is spiking. 

As a result, with this new device from Samsung, you can prevent having a heart attack. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around almost 700,000 people in the United States died from heart disease in 2021, and that’s one in every five deaths.

Twitter had been an effective platform various institutions utilize to share their advocacies, such as those who fight climate change. However, these climate action proponents believe much has changed since the billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter. For one, it has become more challenging for them to share their advocacies on the platform. 

Physical threats 

Climate scientists who are suffering insults and mass spam are leaving Twitter to move to other social media platforms as hostile climate-change denialism increases on the social media platform after Musk’s takeover. Since the Tesla lead took over Twitter in October 2022, many of these climate scientists believe it is getting harder to share their advocacies on the platform. 

As these climate advocates become stronger online, there is also a rise in organized resistance from climate reform opponents. 

One of these climate scientists who decided to leave Twitter is Peter Gleick, a climate and water specialist with almost 99,000 followers. Last Sunday, he announced he would stop posting on Twitter because of threats he has been receiving, including direct physical threats. 

“[But] in the past few months, since the takeover and changes at Twitter, the amount, vituperativeness, and intensity of abuse have skyrocketed,” Gleick said, adding he has become accustomed to “offensive, personal, ad hominem attacks, up to and including direct physical threats.”

Andrew Dessler, professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University, also decided to leave Twitter. He said he is moving to the newsletter platform Substack instead. 

“In response to almost any tweet concerning climate change, I find my notifications inundated with replies from verified accounts making misleading or misguided claims,” Dessler pointed out.

Then, there are those who left Twitter earlier, such as glaciologist Ruth Mottram who had over 10,000 followers on the platform. She left in February to join other alternative scientists who have been discovering Mastodon, a different platform that has microblogging features similar to Twitter. 

“It’s really been a revelation in many ways. It’s a much quieter and more thoughtful platform,” Mottram said.

Musk’s comment

There are also researchers who studied the engagements to these posts by climate scientists on Twitter before and after Musk’s takeover. They discovered that engagements to such posts became less after the billionaire took over than before he did. 

Around a week ago, news media outlets reported about these climate scientists who feel they are being abused on Twitter following Musk’s takeover. They say the platform is “now flooded with ‘climate denial.’”

For instance. University College London Earth System Science professor Dr. Mark Maslin spoke to The Guardian, and said he has been the target of abuse and rude comments on Twitter as he argues with “climate deniers.” 

Maslin added that before Musk’s takeover, he used to have meetings with Twitter’s former head of sustainability, Sean Boyle, to ensure his posts would be pushed to the top of feeds. However, Boyle was among the staff Musk laid off after he bought the platform. 

As of press time, there has been no statement from Musk about this issue, except for this tweet he wrote in January: “People on the right should see more ‘left-wing’ stuff and people on the left should see more ‘right-wing’ stuff. But you can just block it if you want to stay in an echo chamber.”

Highly anticipated

Tesla enthusiasts are going gaga over the new photos of the Cybertruck showing its interior that have recently made rounds online. 

The beginning of production for the Cybertruck is just a few months away from now, but Tesla is still keeping mum on new information about the vehicle. 

People have to rely on sightings of the Cybertruck’s prototypes and discern information from these. 

However, Tesla occasionally brings one of those Cybertruck prototypes, such as during its annual shareholder meeting earlier this month and the groundbreaking ceremony of the company’s new and sizable lithium refinery in Texas, as reported previously by PVP Live. These instances are also what people rely on as they give the closest looks at the vehicle. But still, Tesla is not keen on sharing much information about the Cybertruck. 

Especially concerning its interior – which people are yearning to know – no details about it have been revealed yet until these photos circulating online.   

Tesla’s Cybertruck is one of the highly anticipated offers of the company. It is designed to have the utility of a truck with sports car performance. Some of its features revealed by Tesla so far are its ultra-hard 30x cold-rolled stainless steel, Tesla armor glass, and adaptive air suspension, among others.

The new photos appear to be the same prototype seen during Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, where the Cybertruck prototype was shown. The images are revealing important parts of its interior. 

For one, the photos revealed the Cybertruck’s improved yoke steering wheel. Looking at the images, it does not seem to look like any regular Tesla steering wheel. 

Also, looking at the photos, it appears it is a blend of the yoke and round steering wheels available in the latest Tesla Model S and X. It appears the steering wheel also does not have stalls, and it features force touch buttons. 

Furthermore, it could also be seen that Tesla seemed to have maintained the yoke’s general shape yet closed the steering wheel’s top and bottom tips for those who feel more comfortable with the round shape. 

Another feature revealed in the photos is the interior cabin of the Cybertruck. The seat controls appear to have a similar finish as the vehicle’s exoskeleton exterior. In addition, the center console features a sliding cover that looks the same as the vehicle’s tonneau cover located at the back. 

‘Afraid to make it dirty’

Netizens, particularly Tesla enthusiasts, are airing their sentiments about the circulating photos. @DirtyTesLa on Twitter said, “This is the best Cybertruck interior pic we’ve seen yet! I love that the storage matches the tonneau cover.” 

“#cybertruck interior, looks pretty workhorse like. I like it. would be afraid to make it dirty,” Volodymyr Burenin (@vbureninhuman) meanwhile tweeted. 

Sony officially shares details about its portable ‘Project Q’ device

Sony’s “Project Q” is every PlayStation fan’s dream: a handheld device where you can play PS5 games via Wi-Fi.

The Japanese company confirmed the news during its PlayStation Showcase this week, saying the device is currently in the works. And since there’s still no final product, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan shared it would be called Project Q temporarily. Other details about the product, which is set to launch later this year, were even revealed during the event, making the wait for it more exciting.

“We will launch a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi,” said Ryan. “Internally known as ‘Project Q,’ it has an 8-inch HD screen and all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.”

The device is expected to have an 8-inch LCD screen with up to 1080p resolution at 60fps. According to the company’s press release, it even includes adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and “all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.”

However, while the things mentioned sound enticing, it is important to note that Project Q can only be used on games installed on the user’s PS5 console. It is also not meant for playing games via the cloud. In simplest terms, it is just another device where you can play games you already have on your console and not something that can cater to games natively. This sounds quite disappointing since the device looks promising, but there’s still hope that Sony might add it. After all, Sony is one of the biggest gaming cloud companies, so it is not impossible.

Apple wants to turn your locked iPhones into smart home displays

Apple plans to make your iPhone more functional even when it is locked. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company’s upcoming iOS 17 update will include a new capability for iPhones to display a similar interface you see in smart home displays.

Gurman noted that the feature would build on iPhone’s lock screen widgets, allowing users to see a variety of information on their screen, including the weather, calendar appointments, and notification. The information will reportedly be displayed when the device is locked and placed horizontally. It is expected to also use a dark background with bright text, making it possible to view the details on the screen from a distance, even at night.

The report adds that while it is also being planned to be delivered to iPads, it might take a while since the widgets (which were released to iPhones via iOS16 last year) aren’t still available on the said devices.

The lock screen of iPhones isn’t the only thing getting a revamp in the anticipated update from Apple. There are also a lot of other features and changes coming to the different sections of the OS, including in the Wallet app, SharePlay, and AirPlay. Other reports also claim that Apple is concocting new creations, such as the AI-powered health coach codenamed “Quartz.” Speaking of AI, the company is also hiring AI talents, which might mean improved and new AI features across the Apple ecosystem in the future. Google arms merchants with AI via new ‘Product Studio’ tool for generating product imagery

AI is all over Google‘s ecosystem now, and even businesses are benefiting from them. This week, Google announced that merchants would soon be able to access a new AI-powered tool called Product Studio, which will allow them to produce their own product imagery within the Merchant Center Next platform.

The idea behind the tool is to help merchants design and produce their own product imagery without additional cost. Specifically, instead of manually having them through photoshoots, the tool will employ AI to allow the users to decide the additional elements they think would improve their product presentation. For instance, merchants can ask the AL tool to make a product “surrounded by peaches, with tropical plants in the background.”

Aside from adding AI-generated elements to the product imagery, Product Studio will also allow the removal of backgrounds, especially if you want a simpler presentation. Even more, Google said that the tool could enhance low-resolution images.

The company promised to roll out the tool in the coming months to US-based users. And aside from Merchant Center Next, merchants should also be able to access the Product Studio using Google and YouTube apps on Shopify soon.

Product Studio is just one of the business-focused AI products Google recently revealed. During its Marketing Live event for advertisers, the company discussed a lot of plans and other new features dedicated to helping merchants elevate their businesses. One includes the plan to improve Google’s automatically created assets ad Search setting using generative AI to help further beef up the relevance of Search ads. Moreover, the search giant shared that it started the test for ads “directly integrated” into its conversational AI experience in Search.
