Twitter Blue editing feature now has 1-hour limit

0

Twitter is now increasing the time limit of its editing feature for Blue subscribers. From 30 minutes, the company said that paying users will now have up to 1 hour of time limit to edit their tweets.

The feature was first introduced to Twitter Blue in September as part of the company’s move to lure more subscribers. Prior to this release, however, many expressed concern about the feature, saying giving users the ability to edit their tweets could mean trouble. Specifically, some said it could be used to edit older tweets to change the narrative of stories. Thankfully, Twitter easily solved this concern by adding a history section to the feature.

The editing capability is just one of the features included in Twitter Blue. Others include 50% fewer ads presence in For You and Following timelines, prioritized rankings in conversations and search, 10,000-character-long tweets, text formatting, Bookmark Folders, Undo Tweet, Reader feature, and more.

Despite adding these new features, Twitter Blue remains repulsive for some. To recall, the launch of the subscription was linked to the news of Elon Musk removing up to 400,000 legacy checkmarks in hopes of encouraging users to embrace Twitter Blue. However, the platform only received backlash. After this, the company was spotted returning the marks to celebrities, with personalities stressing they didn’t pay for it.

During the first three months of the subscription’s launch, the company also made an underwhelming figure, which was $11 million in mobile subscriptions. Currently, the offer also doesn’t seem to be succeeding. Travis Brown, who tracks Twitter Blue subscriptions, said on Monday that Twitter “last week had the lowest number of newly identified subscribers I’ve seen since early February.”

Increasing the Twitter Blue subscriber population, nonetheless, isn’t the only problem of Twitter. After Musk took over Twitter, some advertisers fled the platform. Advertising means a lot for Twite’s annual revenue, which is expected to fall to less than $3bn this year, as per Musk. In April, the Tesla CEO said advertisers were coming back to the platform, but data and statements oppose the claims. This is one of the biggest challenges the new Twitter CEO, Linda Yaccarino, will have to resolve in her new position.

Meta stresses promise to honor legacy badges as Verified program reaches India

0

Meta Verified is now in India. Alongside this announcement, Meta underlined its intention to continue recognizing the legacy badges of its users.

The approach is far from what Twitter tried to implement to promote its Blue subscription offering. In its recent blog post, the Facebook and Instagram parent company explained why keeping badges on such users is important.

“These accounts passed through a set of criteria to confirm their authentic presence and may be more susceptible to impersonation than the average user,” Meta said. “So, it’s important we maintain the verified badge to protect their accounts and the people that engage with them.”

The statement came alongside the company’s announcement of the Meta Verified expansion to India after bringing it to the US, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Meta CEO announced that the verification offer is expected to arrive in Brazil soon.

The pricing of the offer still observes the base pricing of the company in the US, which is $11.99/month on the web and $14.99/month on mobile. For India-based customers, these numbers translate to a monthly subscription of ₹699 for iOS and Android and ₹599 for the web.

The bundle subscription offers a handful of benefits from Meta, including a verified badge, proactive account monitoring against impersonation, and account service support. For the latter, the company promised to make the Hindi language available “in the coming months.” Moreover, the company noted that it made some changes in the offering after receiving some feedback from current Verified customers.

“Since our initial test of Meta Verified in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve made a few adjustments based on learnings, including the removal of increased reach for additional test countries,” Meta said. “This continues to be the approach for India. We’re exploring elements to add to the subscription as we roll out to more places and will share more when we’re ready.”

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition now available for Chromebooks

0

Google announced that Chromebook users can now purchase Minecraft: Bedrock Edition from the Google Play Store. Note, however, that the version has certain eligibility requirements for Chromebooks. On a positive note, Google said that if your unit is one of those launched in the last three years, it should make the cut.

Here are the detailed minimum and recommended lists of requirements for the said game on Chromebooks:

Minimum:

  • Operating System: ChromeOS 111
  • System Architecture: 64-bit (x86_64, arm64-v8a)
  • Processor: AMD A4-9120C, Intel Celeron N4000, Intel 3865U, Intel i3-7130U, Intel m3-8100Y, Mediatek Kompanio 500 (MT8183), Qualcomm SC7180 or better
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Storage: Minimum of 1 GB game installation, maps, and other files

Recommended:

  • Operating System: ChromeOS 111
  • System Architecture: 64-bit (x86_64, arm64-v8a)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 3250C, Intel Celeron N4500, Intel i3-7130U, Mediatek Kompanio 500 (MT8183), Qualcomm SC7180 or better
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Storage: Minimum of 1 GB game installation, maps, and other files

The new version sells for $19.99, which gives users different features and capabilities, including access to Minecraft Marketplace, the ability to play on Realms and cross-play functionality. However, it is important to note that users can’t port their worlds from another platform, which means they have to do it again on Chromebooks.

On the other hand, users also have the option to opt for a much cheaper version of the game for Android, which costs $6.99. In case of an upgrade from this, a $13.99 Chromebook version is also available.

OpenAI CEO reiterates GPT-5 is still not in training

0

As OpenAI tries to convince the world of its willingness to cooperate with regulators, company CEO Sam Altman stressed again that GPT-5 is still not in training.

Altman shared this during a conference hosted by India’s Economic Times. “We have a lot of work to do before we start that model,” Altman said. “We’re working on the new ideas that we think we need for it, but we are certainly not close to it to start.”

Altman’s confirmation follows his earlier statements turning down the idea of the start of GPT-5 training. The executive even underlined that the company might not do it for some time.

The decision was affected by the collective plea of different individuals, including Elon Musk, who requested “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”

The news should then invalidate previous rumors about the existence of GPT-5, with some claiming OpenAI was expecting it to achieve Artificial General Intelligence. This, however, will also affect Microsoft, which has been investing multi-billion dollars in OpenAI. To recall, the company is employing ChatGPT (GPT-4 as the latest model) on its search engine Bing and other products. Mikhail Parakhin, chief technology officer for Bing, even claimed in May that Bing could be updated with new models “maybe 3 times a year or so.” Unfortunately, given OpenAI’s firm decision not to start the GPT-5 training, one might need to take Parakhin’s promise with a pinch of salt for now.

NYC files newest lawsuit against Kia, Hyundai due to TikTok ‘Kia Boys’ trend

0

New York City is joining others in suing car manufacturers Kia and Hyundai after experiencing high car stealing and accident reports sparked by the “Kia Boys.”

The lawsuit detailed by The Wall Street Journal stressed that the companies showed negligence by not adding anti-theft devices that could somehow prevent their products from being easily stolen. Specifically, these devices refer to the electronic immobilizers that will prevent thieves from making the ignition of the cars work using simple tools.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York further stated that both car brands only represented 2.9% of cars in the city but made up 19.3% of car theft incidents in 2023. The lawsuit went on to share that this translated to 977 Hyundai and Kia cars stolen from January to April 2023.

The crimes involving stealing Kia and Hyundai vehicles started with a trend on TikTok after the Kia Boys shared with viewers how to bypass the said auto brands using tools. According to the videos, Kia and Hyundai vehicles produced between 2015 and 2019 don’t have electronic immobilizers. Interstingly, other manufacturers have already made it part of their production standards during the same timeline.

The trend went viral, luring many to try it and resulting in stealing and property damage. Even more, it resulted in 14 crashes and eight fatalities. To stop this, it can be recalled that Kia released an update to prevent stealing, but a recent report says that this solution failed. On May 31, a report shared a recent robbery of a Kia car from Cobb County despite having the update. Unfortunately, this could translate to the same issue for up to 3 million Kias with the same vulnerability.

Google asks workers to return to office

0

Google wants its workforce to start going back to the office as the pandemic continues to wind down globally.

According to the internal memo (via The Verge) the company sent to the workers, those currently working remotely and living near the office are encouraged to opt for a hybrid work setup. The message also reminds employees who are not remotely working about the need to report to the office three times a week, adding failure to do it can affect their performance review ratings.

Despite the announcement, Google stressed that the company would still allow remote work arrangements. However, it will now be limited, the company added, saying the acceptance of such a request is “by exception only.”

Here is a part of the email sent to the Google workforce:

“We know that a number of people moved to fully remote work for many good reasons, as we all adjusted to the pandemic. For those who are remote and who live near a Google office, we hope you’ll consider switching to a hybrid work schedule. Our offices are where you’ll be most connected to Google’s community. Going forward, we’ll consider new remote work requests by exception only.”

Reddit offers API pricing exemptions for accessibility apps, but some mods are doubting

Reddit is making changes in its API pricing to consider non-commercial apps catering to the accessibility needs of users. However, the r/Blind subreddit, which is joining the protest next week, says concerns remain unanswered.

Reddit’s API pricing made noise recently, with third-party apps fearing possible shutdown. Many communities voiced concerns regarding the matter, and it seems Reddit is now making some exceptions to this. According to a report from The Verge, the company contacted “select developers of non-commercial apps that address accessibility needs and offered them exemptions from our large-scale pricing terms.”

However, r/blind moderators are expressing doubt about Reddit’s statements to The Verge. “We have not had clarification on Reddit’s definitions of ‘accessibility focused apps’ or any process to determine apps that qualify,” the moderator shared. “There is no clarification on ‘non-comercial apps,’ given the current model of the apps listed by The Verge.”

The post went on to say that r/blind and u/rumster subreddits have been trying to contact Reddit over accessibility issues “over the past 3 years” with “no substantive response” from the company. The post added that another moderator had talks with Reddit, but “as of the current time, our concerns have gone unheard, and Reddit remains firm.”

“We have strong concerns that Reddit lacks expertise to consider the varying access needs of the blind and visually impaired community,” the moderator added.

The comment follows the r/Blind subreddit’s message, explaining how the API pricing would affect mods and communities relying on accessibility features from third-party apps.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo, to Dystopia, to Reddit for Blind, to Luna for Reddit, to BaconReader. Even if you don’t use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This doesn’t only impact your ability to access Reddit in a fluid, customizable, and efficient way; many of us on the mod team are also blind, and we depend on those third party apps to make sure that this community remains a safe, fun, and productive place. Unfortunately, new Reddit, and the official Reddit apps, just don’t provide us with the levels of accessibility we need in order to continue effectively running this community. As well, the Transcribers of Reddit, the many dedicated folks who volunteer to transcribe and describe thousands and thousands of images on Reddit, may also be unable to operate.

Microsoft is now testing its Windows 11 built-in RGB lighting controls

0

Windows 11 users would soon be able to control their RGB lighting using their computers without the need for third-party apps.

The feature will be called “Dynamic Lighting,” which will employ the open HID LampArray standard. According to Microsoft, this feature is made possible through its partnership with different brands like Acer, Asus, HP, HyperX, Logitech, Razer, and Twinkly. The company shared the plan to expand these partnerships to cater to more device brands in the future.

Once officially rolled out, the feature will be able to control the lighting of their devices, including peripherals, such as mouse and keyboard. However, given that the feature is still in test, it might work a little less impressive on wireless accessories.

The feature is included in the recently-released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23475 to Dev Channel Insiders. It can be accessed by going to Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. Meanwhile, according to Microsoft, here are the current device models with support for the Dynamic Lighting feature (albeit many “have not yet been verified for compatibility by Microsoft”):

Apple updates App Store guidelines to deter cloning

0

Apple made some changes in its App Store Review Guidelines. Of all the changes, however, the one that stands out is the company’s new reminder about submissions of apps intentionally copying the popular ones to mislead customers.

“Come up with your own ideas,” Apple’s updated agreements and guidelines read. “We know you have them, so make yours come to life. Don’t simply copy the latest popular app on the App Store, or make some minor changes to another app’s name or UI and pass it off as your own. In addition to risking an intellectual property infringement claim, it makes the App Store harder to navigate and just isn’t fair to your fellow developers. Submitting apps which impersonate other apps or services is considered a violation of the Developer Code of Conduct and may result in removal from the Apple Developer Program.”

The announcement came in the midst of ChatGPT’s popularity, which signaled the introduction of copycat AI apps on the Play Store. To recall, prior to the release of the official ChatGPT app, many developers listed their apps in the place using words like “ChatGPT” or “GPT-4.” However, the rise of such kinds of apps raised concerns among experts, who discovered that some suspicious apps were actually laced with malware.

The changes in Apple’s guidelines are expected to address such concerns. Nonetheless, the company still hasn’t shared how it will implement this or what specific actions or standards it will perform to detect copycats on Play Store.
