Snap unveils ‘My AI Snaps’ generative feature

0

Snap announced a new generative capability for its My AI feature on Snapchat, which should now be able to send users a Snap in response to the ones they sent. Unfortunately, while My AI is available to everyone for free, the new capability is only limited to Snapchat+ subscribers.

The release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT attracted big tech companies. For Microsoft, it resulted in its revamped Bing and Edge, which can now generate images. The software company, nonetheless, is not the only one benefiting from ChatGPT. Other companies also integrated the model into their products. One of them is Snap, which introduced its My AI chatbot feature on Snapchat in February. And now, the company announced that it can finally respond to Snap images sent by users.

According to Snap, My AI will be able to respond to these Snaps with its own AI-generated Snaps. Snap said that the AI-generated image responses should be relevant to users. The company even made a promising note in its post, saying you can send the bot your “latest grocery haul,” and it “might recommend a recipe.”

Despite this thrilling capability, like other tech companies, Snap still wants its users to be careful in using AI in its products. As the company stressed, “mistakes may occur” despite how the bot is designed, adding users should not rely on it for pieces of advice. Also, the company said that the user’s messages would be stored “to improve the product experience.” That includes Snap images. With this, users may need to think twice before sending their own photos or pictures that are something personal.

WWDC 2023 Is Happening This June 5th, Here’s What To Expect – Apple Inc. News

0

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is an annual information technology conference where developers can attend sessions and meet with the company’s engineers. The event also showcases the company’s new software and technologies in its iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS families, including more Apple software. This event is bound to get even bigger and grander this year.

The WWDC 2023 will once again set the tone for Apple’s future. Apple does not reveal official information about what will happen during the event until it actually presents it on the day. However, there are news and rumors about what people can expect. This year, Apple might introduce its first-ever mixed reality headset, together with a more sizeable MacBook Air, a significant watchOS update, app sideloading on iOS, and so much more. Read on for a closer look.

Apple headset

The rumored unveiling of the Apple headset may be the biggest and the most highly anticipated revelation during WWDC 2023. Speculations say that the headset will run on a new xrOS and utilize mixed reality, which merges virtual and augmented realities.

Leaks also say that Apple may incorporate sports, gaming, workouts, and iPad apps into this new headset to fault what the new platform is capable of.

Some of the headset’s rumored features are a dual 4K micro OLED displays with 5,000 nits brightness and 4000 pixels per inch; over a dozen cameras to track facial expressions and hand gestures, and map the environment; Iris scanning authentication; air typing and hand gesture-based controls; and so much more.

MacBook Air 15

Another is the revealing of the MacBook Air 15. Rumors and developer logs say Apple will launch a 15-inch MacBook Air with big-screen portable Macs more accessible for more people.

With the current-generation 13-inch MacBook Air not too old since it was launched, the rumored 15-inch version is said to keep using a variant of that system’s M2 chip. Plus, it might feature 8GB of RAM in a base configuration. Also, a higher resolution display may be present, just like the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Brand new software: iOS 17, watchOS 10, and so much more

Aside from all those rumors about hardware launches at WWDC 2023, speculations also say Apple will provide details about the latest updates coming this year to its iOS, watchOS, iPadOS, and tvOS platforms.

One of the more significant changes with iOS is that Apple may finally add support for installing applications not downloaded from the App Store. But this sideloading of apps is challenged by European regulations.

Other software changes the company may unveil include a brand new mental health app and widgets coming back to the Apple Watch.

Here are more things expected at Apple’s WWDC 2023 event:

  • M-Series Mac Pro
  • iOS 17
  • iPadOS 17
  • watchOS 10
  • macOS 14

WWDC 2023 will be held from June 5th to June 9th.

Reddit’s new API pricing might shut down famous third-party app Apollo

0

Reddit‘s new API pricing system might force the popular third-party app Apollo to shut down. According to the developer, Christian Selig, the new policy could cost up to $20 million per year if the app would be run in the future the way it is running now.

Apollo is a favorite third-party app among Reddit fans looking for an alternative option for the Reddit client. However, it is currently facing a huge problem due to how much Reddit wants to charge third-party apps. The developer of the app recently posted on Reddit about the matter, which he described as “close to Twitter’s pricing.”

“I’ll cut to the chase: 50 million requests costs $12,000, a figure far more than I ever could have imagined,” Selig wrote. “Apollo made 7 billion requests last month, which would put it at about 1.7 million dollars per month, or 20 million US dollars per year. Even if I only kept subscription users, the average Apollo user uses 344 requests per day, which would cost $2.50 per month, which is over double what the subscription currently costs, so I’d be in the red every month.”

Selig shared that he had talks with Reddit but still stressed how “deeply disappointed” he was with the price since the company previously assured it would be reasonable and not follow the path of Twitter. To recall, Twitter also recently announced a huge change in its API pricing, which caused some services to shut down or find other platforms, like Mastodon.

The developer further said he asked Reddit if they could be “flexible” with the pricing, but the company stood firm in their new pricing. Aside from Apollo’s developer, fans of the app with millions of installs expressed dismay over Reddit’s decision.

“Reddit is jealous that you made a better app,” one user commented on the post. “Shame on the greed.”

“This is the end for Apollo,” another one added. “Reddit is going in full greed mode which is unsurprising to say the least. Their pricing was designed to kill 3rd party apps.”

Meta platforms to remove news in CA if bill requiring payment for publishers passes

0

Meta said it would pull news content in California once the Journalism Preservation Act is turned into a law. The bill aims to charge companies a “journalism usage fee” when they share local news pieces on their platforms.

“If the Journalism Preservation Act passes, we will be forced to remove news from Facebook and Instagram rather than pay into a slush fund that primarily benefits big, out-of-state media companies under the guise of aiding California publishers,” Andy Stone, Meta’s communications director, shared on Twitter. “The bill fails to recognize that publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform themselves and that substantial consolidation in California’s local news industry came over 15 years ago, well before Facebook was widely used. It is disappointing that California lawmakers appear to be prioritizing the best interests of national and international media companies over their own constituents.”

Stone’s post attracted the attention of Matt Pearce, an LA Times reporter and president of the Media Guild of the West. The journalist called Meta’s decision “corporate bullying” and stressed that discussions are needed to clear disagreements. However, Pearce said that Meta clearly didn’t address this, which is reflected by its censorship threats. He also added that Meta didn’t appear in the two committee hearings but made a threat a day before an Assembly floor vote. This, as Pearce said, “is clearly designed to stoke fear, not debate.”

“The platforms have skimmed from our work, bought off publishers with ‘charitable’ grants, then act like bullies the moment they face accountability,” wrote Pearce. “CJPA is a good bill. It would restore some balance to the publisher-platform relationship. 70% of the money has to go to newsroom payroll. Publishers have to make annual public reports on how they’re spending the money and show they’re being responsible. But reasoned debate becomes impossible when bad actors like Meta act like this. It’s incredibly disappointing.”

Pearce’s comment caused Stone to reply, saying the ban is not a threat but “just a decision we will have to make that legislators should know about as they consider this bill.” Pearce ended the exchanges by saying that Meta could have at least joined a committee hearing if it really wanted to participate in the discussion.

Chinese company Oppo reveals new MR headset dedicated to developers

0

Chinese electronics company Oppo unveiled its own mixed-reality headset this Wednesday. However, “Oppo MR Glass Developer Edition” is not meant for everyone. Instead, the company aims to use the new device to entice developers to create apps suited for mixed reality.

The device follows the release of Oppo Air Glass 2 in 2022. However, instead of appearing as a normal-sized pair of glasses, the MR Glass Developer Edition will be a huge headset that will house Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Plus chipset. It also comes with a pair of controllers, allowing users to interact with the visuals projected in front of them.

The headset will arrive to developers in China in the second half of 2023, but the company still has no clear plans on whether it will be made commercially available. A report from CNBC clarifies this, with Oppo admitting that the device is meant for developers. Oppo XR technology director Xu Yi told the media outlet that the company wants to use the headset to allow developers “create apps and figure out the best uses for mixed reality technology.”

To further explain the company’s decision over the device’s target market, Xu said today’s mixed reality still needs improvements in different sections, including in tech itself and specific applications. Xu added that AR “is not there yet, it may be several years away.” With this, Oppo thinks involving different developers in exploring the tech by giving them a dedicated device is the right move.

This puts Oppo on a path different from its tech competitors, which are now manufacturing AR headsets as part of their brand offerings. Some include Microsoft, Xiaomi, Meta, and Apple. The latter is expected to reveal its ‘Apple Reality Pro‘ headset in the coming days, which is reportedly armed with two 1.41-inch Micro OLED screens with 4,000 ppi each and 5,000 nits of brightness. Meta, meanwhile, is now preparing its Quest 3 headset, which reportedly received huge improvements compared to its predecessor.

MSI unveils dedicated ‘AI Artist’ image creator for its future devices

0

MSI wants to put an AI image generator on its laptops. Called “AI Artist,” the program will be able to generate images based on the descriptions of the users.

MSI recently had its MSIology: Luxury Gaming Experience event with Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. The new limited edition co-branded laptop “Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport” was unveiled at the event. However, the spotlight was easily stolen by a new creation shared by the computer brand: the AI Artist.

The program will employ generative AI, which is becoming increasingly common nowadays. It can generate images based on descriptions that will be entered into its text box, and it also has buttons specifically for choosing the style and size of the picture. For the former, two options are currently available: Realism and Mang.

The program is different from other AI image generators because it is meant specifically for MSI laptops. According to MSI, this won’t just make AI image generation faster and more convenient, but it will also prevent the risk of data leakage, which is one of the major concerns about different AI creations now. However, MSI still has to share more details about the program, which it plans to include in future MSI devices.

Amazon now uses AI to identify damaged products

Amazon is now using the power of AI to help in its warehouses. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the business giant is specifically using AI to detect damaged items, preventing them from being sent to customers.

More and more companies are taking advantage of technological advancements to improve their business operations further. For instance, there’s Wendy’s experimenting with AI bots capable of taking orders, while Boston Dynamics promotes its Spot robot for inspecting “dangerous, inaccessible, and remote environments, automate data collection on your site.” Amazon is now joining this craze by using AI at its two warehouses.

According to the report, the company wants to reduce the number of damaged products customers receive. Nonetheless, the giant also aims to use the tech to promote automation in its operations, resulting in faster packaging of products and better customer experience. This will reduce the responsibilities handled by warehouse workers currently assigned to check the items for damages.

The AI is specifically integrated into the imaging station of Amazon, where items go through during the picking and packing process. If the system detects damages, the bin containing the item will be directed to a worker for confirmation.

Christoph Schwerdtfeger, a software development manager at Amazon, said that AI is three times more effective in performing the job than an actual worker. With this, the company decided to roll out the AI to 10 more sites it has in North America and Europe.

UK Regulators Provide Latest Roadblock to Activision Blizzard Takeover Despite EU Backing

0
Glass Panels Exterior of the Microsoft Building

For a fleeting moment, it seemed as though the months of delays in Microsoft’s quest to acquire Activision Blizzard in a deal worth $69 billion were finally coming to an end, but it’s not to be. It seems an eternity has passed since the American corporation first started its pursuit of the Video game company, but it seems they are no closer to acquiring Activision Blizzard than when it first started. The most recent news that the European Union regulators approved Microsoft’s acquisition of the gaming firm should have been cause for celebration. The fact that the European Commission was now satisfied Microsoft had addressed their grievances should have been the final hurdle to clear. But the UK has doubled down on its stance from last month as they continue to block the deal despite months of back and forth in this endless saga. But what does this mean for the viability of the deal in the future? And why is the UK vetoing the agreement?

It was only back in December when Microsoft had agreed a deal with Nintendo that sought to put any worries over ring-fencing the market to bed, but five months down the line, the same issue is rearing its ugly head in a different form. In late 2022 Xbox head Phil Spencer announced that Microsoft had entered a 10-year-long deal with Nintendo to keep Call of Duty on its platforms. The agreement came shortly after the company confirmed it offered the same deal to Sony. However, it was dependent on Microsoft closing on its acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc. At the same time, they committed to keeping Call of Duty on Steam even as it headed to Xbox and PC Game Pass, a deal they worked out with Valve. Spencer announced the agreement between Xbox and Nintendo via his personal Twitter account, in which he also stated Call of Duty would continue to launch on Steam after the acquisition had gone through. The move served dual purposes. It put pressure on Sony to accept the same sort of 10-year deal for Call of Duty that they had already been offered. But mainly, it was a performance for regulators to paint PlayStation and Sony as unreasonable in their negotiations as the only big platform to resist accepting the deal despite assurances from Microsoft that it didn’t plan on taking the series exclusively. As of May this year, those specific issues are behind us, but the same concern over Microsoft setting the terms and conditions for the market continues to arise. It seems as though this is far from the last of Microsoft’s problems in the dispute surrounding their buyout of Activision.

The hold-up on the EU’s end until now has been in seeking assurances that Microsoft wouldn’t restrict Sony’s ability to have certain games on their platforms once the acquisition had gone through, as was the issue in December. Sony had led industry opposition to the takeover, arguing that any limitation on Call of Duty’s availability on PlayStation would harm the console’s sales, so it’s understandable why their approach has been anything but welcoming up to this point. However, the latest iteration of this saga has seen the EU accept that Microsoft’s remedies and commitments regarding cloud gaming are sufficient enough to let the deal go through. These remedies include giving a free license to consumers in EU countries that would allow them to stream using any cloud game streaming services for all current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games that they have a license for. Cloud providers will also be offered a free license to stream these games in EU markets, with these licenses being automatic. In effect, it means that consumers will have a right to stream Activision Blizzard games they’ve purchased or subscribed to for any cloud game on any device using any operating system. An inclusive setup that, on the face of it, sounds like a reasonable solution to most of the concerns Sony has levied at Microsoft over this deal for quite some time, but UK regulators are set to drag this never-ending saga out further.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority blocked the deal less than a month ago, citing concerns over the cloud gaming markets. This obviously infuriated both sides of the deal, with Microsoft suggesting that the move would discourage more investment in the UK and stunt technological innovation in the process, while Activision Blizzard went one step further and stated that it was reevaluating its growth strategy for the UK market. An Activision Blizzard spokesperson said: “The CMA’s report contradicts the ambitions of the UK to become an attractive country to build technology businesses. We will work aggressively with Microsoft to reverse this appeal. The report’s conclusions are a disservice to UK citizens, who face increasingly dire economic prospects. We will reassess our growth plans for the UK. Global innovators large and small will take note that – despite all its rhetoric – the UK is clearly closed for business.” In fairness to the CMA’s decision, their concerns over the deal do have merit even after Microsoft has thrown the kitchen sink at it, making concessions where they deem necessary and doing everything they can to convince regulators they are not in this for making any Triple-A titles exclusive. However, the Authority’s decision to veto the deal has added yet more laborious work to the timeframe, and with Microsoft having announced their intent to buy Activision Blizzard nearly 500 days ago now, patience is wearing thin from all parties involved. Microsoft has already expressed an intent to appeal the UK’s ruling, but it will likely take months before the process is complete. The EU’s decision may help boost Microsoft’s chances of getting this giant deal over the line eventually, but the company still faces a massive battle in the UK before it gets there.

New Leak Reveals Apple’s Plans For Its iPhone 17 Series In 2025 – iPhone News

0

We’re getting closer and closer to the release of the much-awaited iPhone 15 series, and more and more speculations about it are coming out, only adding to the excitement. And even before the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup, assumptions about the next iPhone 16 series are also circulating. Whoa.

But wait, there’s more. Did you know that leaks about the iPhone 17 lineup bound for release this 2025 are also beginning to circulate around? Yes.

iPhone 17

A respected display analyst, who is also the co-founder and CEO of end-to-end supply chain expertise provider Display Supply Chain Consultants, Ross Young, has revealed details about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models. For iPhone 17, Apple’s 2025 plans for this lineup were shared.

Let’s start with the iPhone 16 units first. Young said that the iPhone 16 Pro models would feature a marginally taller 19.6:9 aspect ratio, compared with the current models’ 19.5:9 aspect ratio, thanks to the large sizes of their displays.

He also revealed details about the exact dimensions, saying that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max displays would measure 6.27 inches and 6.86 inches, respectively.

To compare, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, like the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, will measure 6.12 inches and 6.69 inches, respectively.

Now for the stuff you are curious about, the iPhone 17, slated for release this 2025. In a brave move to share this leak, Young said these larger display sizes would also be present in the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus models.

Furthermore, 2025 will also be the year the Cupertino-based tech giant will equip its standard models with a 120Hz ProMotion display and the power-efficient, variable refresh rate LTPO panels that will support them.

You can remember the company introducing ProMotion with its iPhone 13 Pro in 2021. Since high refresh rate displays are all the while being seen in competitors’ models, this is considered long overdue.

Finally, Young said that the iPhone 17 Pro units would be the first iPhones to support under-display Face ID technology. This would signal the end of the pill-shaped cutout in iPhone 14 Pro units.
