It’s no surprise that the most talked-about video game on Twitter last year was Animal Crossing New Horizons, as most fans credit the life sim title for holding the gaming community together during the global coronavirus pandemic. However, the rest of Twitter’s top games of 2020 are ones players may not have seen coming, making for an interesting list heading into 2021.

Back in November, Screen Rant talked with Twitter’s head of Sports Canada, Conor Clarance, to review the way gamers have moved the landscape of Twitter. During that time, Clarance mentioned that Animal Crossing New Horizons was the most discussed title in Canada with more than 4 million tweets from the North American country alone. However, even with 4 million tweets, Canada wasn’t able to make it onto Twitter’s list of the Top Ten countries that tweeted about games in 2020.

Nonetheless, Canada’s 4 million tweets about Animal Crossing in November 2020 were indicating that the outcome of Twitter’s most talked about game of 2020. According to a post by Rishi Chadha, the Head of Gaming Content for Twitter, Animal Crossing New Horizons was the most tweeted about game worldwide in 2020.

Rumors revolving around Grand Theft Auto 6 have been circulating for a while now, and it appears that it doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. This latest rumor shakes things up for the series as a whole, making the highly anticipated title even more ambitious than we thought.

This most recent leak is from a prominent YouTuber who goes by the online username LongSensation. What makes fans inclined to believe his claims is the fact that he was able to accurately predict all kinds of details about different Call of Duty games in the past.

It’s not an understatement to say that leaks and rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6 have been around for a long time. More specifically, these started circulating in 2018 since Red Dead Redemption 2 was released.

While a couple rumors, such as the game’s map, were debunked before, there’s still a plethora of rumors out there that could still be proven to be true. YouTuber LongSensation declared the most recent leak, and this time around, it’s all about the main character of the game.

According to the leaker, Grand Theft Auto 6 may feature a female playable protagonist for the first time in the franchise’s history. LongSensation, otherwise known as Tom Henderson on Twitter, shared the information on his Twitter account. Naturally, the tweet caused some discourse to ensue, with some asking for more details about the claim.

The claim also left many fans to speculate what Rockstar Games plans are. Some wonder if the alleged female protagonist will play the same way as Arthur Morgan or Niko Bellic, or if the developer will be following the footsteps of companies like Ubisoft and will give players the option to choose the gender of the main character.

On the other hand, some fans think that this leak will most likely work the same way as Grand Theft Auto 5, wherein the game had multiple protagonists. Sadly, the leaker didn’t elaborate on his claim and moved on to tweet about other topics.

As always, we should regard this information with a pinch of salt, at least until Rockstar Games makes an official announcement. However, if LongSensation’s leak is true, then this may not be the only title from the developer to star a female protagonist.

Based on Red Dead Redemption 2’s storyline, there’s also a big chance that Sadie Adler may be taking the reins in Red Dead Redemption 3 as the main protagonist.

That being said, it would be great if these rumors were true though. Featuring female main characters in their games would be a major turning point for a studio like Rockstar Games, especially since it paid its women developers less than the men at some point in its history.

There’s one thing we can say for sure right now though, and that’s the fact that Rockstar Games is currently focusing its time and energy on successfully launching Grand Theft Auto 5 for the PlayStation 5 this year. Not only that, the developer has also been prioritizing the development of DLCs for both its online titles, Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online.

As such, it’s best to sit still and wait for now until the developer is ready to reveal any tidbit of information about Grand Theft Auto 6.

Ash’s Rival Gary Oak Will Be Returning To Pokemon Journeys

Starting all the way back in 1996, Pokemon remains as one of the largest video game franchises in the world, producing a remarkable famous card game, tons of merchandise, and an entire host of sequels stretching over from the Game Boy to the Nintendo Switch. Of course, it also spawned a largely famous anime that still exists to this day, detailing the adventures of Ash Ketchum, his Pokemon partner Pikachu, and a variety of companions.

The anime’s latest iteration, Pokemon Journeys, features Ash and his friend Goh traveling across several of the series’ most iconic locations in search of new challenges to overcome and trainers to beat. It appears one of these trainers will be a familiar face to fans of the franchise, with the anime’s new opening sequence revealing Ash’s iconic and former rival, Gary Oak, will be making a comeback during the new storyline.

For those who aren’t familiar with Gary, the character was a critical part of Ash’s origin story as well as the main opponent for players during the Gen 1 Pokemon games as well as in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.

In the animated adaptation, he stands as the main rival of Ash for the first few seasons following the two starting their Pokemon adventure simultaneously. His grandfather is Professor Oak, one of the most iconic characters in the games and the man who gives Ash his Pikachu. With Ash now a Pokemon League Champion and Gary likely having gathered some experience of his own in the time the two have been apart, it could be exciting to witness another battle between the rivals to look back to their long-running history. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the character is utilized during his appearance in Pokemon Journeys.

It appears now is the best time for the character to come back to the screens considering the recent surge in the fame of Pokemon cards, with the latest trend of seeing famous celebrities buy limited edition packs and collect rare cards.

Rust’s Console Version May Be Launching Soon

Console users who have been looking forward to playing Facepunch Studio’s Rust may not have to wait for very long. Just recently, the crazed online survival game received an ESRB rating that could be an indicator that the console version will be launching soon.

Facepunch Studio announced Rust’s upcoming console version during the XO19 conference. On the other hand, the ESRB rating states that the game will be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While neither ESRB nor the developer mentioned the next-gen consoles, it’s highly possible that Rust can still be played on them thanks to backwards compatibility.

Even though Rust was initially released all the way back in 2013, the multiplayer-only survival experience was able to retain a dedicated fanbase despite all these years. As a matter of fact, the title has been experiencing a surge in popularity once more, as it was able to reach another player milestone a few days ago.

More or less eight years since its launch, Rust was able to break its past record of congruent players by more than 50%. Data shows that the game reached under 204,000 concurrent players at one point, which is an incredible jump from its previous record.

Controversial streamer xQc started to cause trouble for the other online personalities involved, which led to countless viral clips being posted and shared online e.g. Twitter, Reddit, and TikTok.

Thanks to Twitch and its streamers, there’s now a recurring spotlight on the eight-year-old Rust, causing Facepunch Studio’s revenue to increase to incredible numbers. As a matter of fact, Rust was able to amass $1 million in Steam Revenue twice already this year—and to think that we’re only just a few days into 2021.

These incredible numbers just go to show how helpful and effective Twitch as a platform is when it comes to promoting video games. After all, the reception of a streaming platform’s audience can play a major role as to whether or not a game will succeed or fail. Cyberpunk 2077 Dataminers Leak First Look at Multiplayer Mode

Cyberpunk 2077 dataminers have leaked the details of the game’s upcoming multiplayer mode, giving fans an idea of what to expect once the feature goes live. Although players understand that CD Projekt RED won’t be releasing this mode anytime soon, it might interest you to check out some of the features that may be introduced to the game.

CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 was once an incredibly anticipated game. However, it has been steeped in controversy ever since its launch in December 2020. Many individuals in the gaming community who were once looking forward to it either stopped playing or didn’t push through in buying it due to how many game-breaking bugs it has and how there’s not enough content. Not to mention that it performed so poorly on the last-generation consoles that players decided to get full refunds from respective storefronts.

In the case of one player, he wasn’t able to fully celebrate the fact that he obtained the Platinum Trophy because the game crashed while the credits were rolling. We can only imagine just how frustrating that must have been.

As expected of any major title these days, Cyberpunk 2077 also has its own dedicated dataminers who have been busily rifling through the game’s files since its release. Now, it appears that these digital spelunkers were able to successfully glean information about the upcoming multiplayer mode.

The dataminer who initially found the leaked information wanted to remain anonymous. However, you can easily verify the executable files found yourself if you examine them. In other words, those who have a copy of Cyberpunk 2077 can essentially unlock and verify the leak on their own if they want to.

According to the details discovered so far, the executable file has two different multiplayer modes. The first mode is called “Heists,” and it basically plays like your average single-player campaign. The leak also claims that the mode will allegedly have editor helper descriptions and other functions related to it. It was also found that based on these functions, the developer will be implementing a strict four-class selection system.

The second multiplayer mode is called “Deathmatch,” and it’s pretty straightforward. The Deathmatch mode’s functions more or less refer to the different text you see on the kill feed. Based on how it’s being written, fans speculate that CD Projekt RED probably wanted Johnny Silverhand to be an announcer at some point.

Among other things, the executable file also shows indications of P2P or “peer-to-peer” connections. It’s worth noting that these connections will allegedly be with some host authority instead of dedicated servers. That said, there’s still a chance that the developer will make the move to dedicated servers once everything has been made public.

Developer CD Projekt RED is currently focused on completely fixing Cyberpunk 2077’s singleplayer mode first before releasing its multiplayer mode, so it’s highly possible that some of the leaked information will be changed or removed at some point during its development.

It’s definitely interesting to see what CD Projekt RED has in mind for Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mode, no matter how far off its launch date may be. Although, the addition of a Deathmatch mode is a bit strange, especially since the action RPG has always been touted as an open-world game.

New Experimental Phasmophobia Gameplay Feature Now Live On Beta

Launched in October 2020 by one-man studio, Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia quickly rose to the top of the Steam charts and became one of the biggest titles of last year that offers a unique and horrifying multiplayer experience. For the unfamiliar, Phasmophobia is an indie early access title that’s basically about ghost hunting.

A group of four players is tasked to explore a variety of haunted locations, and they’re supposed to discover what kind of ghost or spirit is residing there by utilizing different commands and ideas in order to lure it. Kinetic Games is constantly updating and improving the horror game, and now it appears that the developer has decided to spice things up with the latest update.

Apparently, players now have to worry about how much they’re talking and how loud they’re being when a spirit is lurking around the area. According to the most recent patch notes, ghosts will allegedly be able to find a player by following their voice. Kinetic Games notes that “the Ghost will now listen for player voices when hunting and will search those locations.”

The developer adds that this feature is currently still experimental and that it would be highly appreciated if the players report any issues with it so that Kinetic Games can release a fix in a later update. Without a doubt, this new feature definitely adds even more depth to Phasmophobia’s horror experience, given that spirits can now effectively locate and prey on a player, especially when they call out for help.

This kind of feature reminds us of the mic detection feature on Alien Isolation, where the player has to be extra careful when exploring Anesidora because one small noise and the Alien will be quick to investigate.

That being said, we imagine that Phasmophobia’s version of this will be harder in theory, especially since communicating with the rest of one’s team is a crucial part of its gameplay. On the bright side, Kinetic Games clarifies that this noise detecting feature will depend on how loud a player’s microphone is.

In other words, players can whisper to one another and this won’t alert the ghost of their whereabouts. It’s somewhat amusing because Phasmophobia players thought that this feature was already a part of the game since its launch. One player even replied to Kinetic Games’ tweet saying, “I thought the ghost was already listening for my voice. Now I feel stupid.” A lot of other players seem to share the same thoughts, with some being left disappointed that the ghosts weren’t listening to them this entire time.

In other news, the game itself still continues to thrive and exceed expectations. As a matter of fact, Phasmophobia was one of the top five best-selling games on Valve’s digital storefront, Steam, only last week.

The December 2020 update also introduced a brand-new prison level, where players can roam the halls of a vast and empty prison with barely any light. Fans still continue to request Kinetic Games for more content and maps—a few years down the road and Phasmophobia will most likely become an expansive horror experience.

Blizzard’s post links to a letter that can be read in full on the game’s official website, and it essentially talks about sword masters who are linked to the Shimada Clan. As you probably know, the Overwatch heroes Genji and Hanzo were once part of the clan in question.

Blizzard Entertainment’s take on the first-person hero shooter genre received a lot of acclaim and has a decent number of players even to this day. Since playable heroes are one of the vital aspects of hero-based shooters such as Overwatch, the possibility that a new character will be introduced soon is definitely an exciting thought.

Ever since the game’s release, Overwatch has been making use of all kinds of cryptic lore like memos and picture before the release of a brand-new hero. This time around, it appears that the developer may be utilizing the same tactic.

Similar to the previous teasers, Blizzard shared lore that doesn’t appear to focus on anyone within the main cast while at the same time, fleshes out more of the game’s universe. The letter that Blizzard shared is by a blade-wielder named Asa written for her weaponsmith husband named Kashiko.

It essentially reads like a simple letter from a loving wife relaying news of events to her dear husband. More specifically, Asa bemoans her husband’s responsibilities that whisk him away from home, describes worrying events that are taking place, as well as fondly remembers the Shimada Clan.

Now, the part that is probably most significant to Overwatch is when Asa mentions that above others, the Shimada chose her to be their swordmaster. This information can be linked to Genji and Hanzo’s animated short, as it reveals who their teacher is.

That being said, this letter revealing Asa’s past isn’t the only reason why fans think that a new sword-wielding hero is coming to Overwatch. There’s a part in the letter where Asa talks about how their daughter liked Kashiko’s gift. If we rely on context clues, we believe this gift to be a blade.

Asa also criticizes the Hashimoto Clan for creating an environment that’s dangerous to their beloved daughter, making her roam the streets at night as some kind of protector. Given this information, we can’t say for sure whether the upcoming hero will be Asa or their daughter, but the fact that a sword-wielding hero will be joining the roster seems imminent.

That being said, Asa didn’t reveal any other vital information or pictures that we could glean from. The teaser’s format and timing appear very similar to Blizzard’s previous Overwatch reveals. Besides, a new Japanese-themed Deathmatch map, Kanezaka, was released last month, which may be connected to this new lore.

In addition, players theorized that Kanezaka was hinting at an upcoming female hero who will be wielding a melee weapon. In any case, an official announcement might be released some time soon.

Cover Art for Overwatch Tracer’s Fourth London Calling Comic Revealed

Overwatch has quite a lot of playable characters, but one of the most popular and iconic ones on the roster is arguably Tracer. That being said, the time-traveling, happy-go-lucky character has been receiving even more attention recently thanks to the London Calling comic series, which is all about Tracer’s backstory.

Even though the highly anticipated Overwatch 2 will most likely boost the progress of the series’ main story, Blizzard Entertainment has been utilizing short stories and comics not only for entertainment, but in order to give fans a little bit of backstory for some of the most popular characters in the game.

For instance, there was previously a short story dedicated to Symmetra, while there have been released comics dedicated to characters such as McCree and Mercy. So far, there has been no shortage of content that not only gives the characters some love, but gives players lore to chew over.

Launched in September 2020 with the Tracer’s Comic Book skin challenge, the London Calling comic series has Lena Oxton a.k.a Tracer learning and discovering more about the Omnics. The limited-run series is expected to have five issues overall, and so far, Tracer was able to befriend the music-loving Iggy and was introduced to two Omnic leaders.

London Calling is published by Dark Horse Comics, written by Mariko Tamaki, and illustrated by Babs Tarr and Heather Danforth. So far, the comic series has been a huge hit with Overwatch fans, especially those who mainly use Tracer.

The fourth issue is scheduled to be published on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, and the developer shared a sneak peek of the official cover art for the fourth book on the game’s official Twitter account.

The upcoming cover art features an injured Tracer being helped by one of Iggy’s members, with the comic series’ main antagonist looming in the background. Most likely ordering a dreadful attack on humanity that Tracer will work hard to prevent, Kace is the leader of an in-game sentient race of robots that hates all of humanity.

Kace will probably be the biggest threat in London Calling’s last two issues, especially since he claims that “Omnics fight for the whole” while on the other hand, “humans only fight for themselves.”

The third issue put a spotlight on Mondatta’s assassination, which was an event that got featured in the “Alive” animated short from 2016 focusing on Widowmaker. That being said, Kace achieved even more power thanks to the death of the peaceful character, leaving a void that no one else can fill.

We theorize that Tracer will most probably go head-to-head with the villain in the upcoming fourth issue, and if the revealed cover art is anything to go by, the hero won’t have an easy time trying to defeat him. In fact, she might not even be successful in her upcoming battle with Kace—that’s always a possibility.

Of course, justice will always prevail in the end and Tracer will probably stop Kace in the conclusion of London Calling. However, fans now wonder if this new character from the comic series is the mysterious Omnic featured at the end of the Storm Rising event’s PvE mission. If this fan theory is true, then Tracer might be encountering a familiar face in Overwatch 2.
