New Tactical Shooter ‘Thunder Tier One’ By PUBG Dev Announced At The Game Awards

The Game Awards is an event that most people in the gaming community look forward to every year not only because it gives their favorite games a chance to win awards, but because the event contains a ton of new game announcements and reveals.

This year’s event — albeit digital —  is no different, as a new tactical shooter by a PUBG developer has been announced. The new top-down shooter in question is entitled Thunder Tier One, and one to four players are tasked with taking down terrorists as elite operatives.

The game has different modes available, and players can choose between single-player and co-op. On the other hand, those who want to test their abilities against other players can try out PvP. Interested players don’t have to wait very long if their fingers are already itching to test Thunder Tier One out, as a special gameplay preview is now available on Steam.

Thunder Tier One is a game that was originally conceptualized by Pawel Smolewski, the Head of Action and Gunplay Unit of PUBG. The idea of this game came to him in 2016, and since then he has worked on it with a small team as a project to do during his spare time.

This year, however, he showed this passion project of his to developer KRAFTON Inc., who was more than willing to support Smolewski’s endeavors. Now, the original team is still the one working on the game, but it’s now being backed by KRAFTON.

The Game Awards revealed Thunder Tier One’s gameplay trailer, which showcased a military shooter that appears more modern and requires more strategic moves than others.

As it’s a top-down shooter, the player is basically looking down on the battlefield, silently controlling the operative of choice into different and strategic areas of the map. After all, ensuring that the operative has a place to hide once the fighting starts is vital.

The aforementioned Steam gameplay preview will be available this week, albeit only for a limited time. Specifically, it will begin on December 10 at 8 PM PST and will end on December 13 at 8 AM PST. Those who are interested to try out the preview for themselves can experience two different campaign missions in either single-player or co-op.

ss_26ccaec9aea35c62312ed94b844f443ecbd524dc-1920x1080-2201347

There will be a multiplayer mode available to test out as well, and this particular mode has two sub-modes called Advance and Secure, and Deathmatch. Since Thunder Tier One was officially revealed during The Game Awards 2020, Smolewski couldn’t help but show his gratitude. “We’re thankful to our community for their encouragement and feedback so far, and to KRAFTON, Inc. for helping our indie team,” he said.

He goes on to say that he’s excited to “introduce the title to a wider audience” and see what the players’ reactions or feedback are regarding the game. That being said, the future of Thunder Tier One has yet to be seen, as not much has been revealed about the title asides from the gameplay trailer.

For instance, we know that the game will be available on Steam but there’s no news as to whether or not console users will be able to play it too. We’ll have to wait for more details, but for now, there’s already an active Discord server for the game where interested players have gathered.

TWD’s Michonne and Daryl Coming To Fortnite Next Week

maxresdefault-11-7

The Walking Dead’s Michonne and Daryl will be arriving in Fortnite on beginning December 16 as revealed during last night’s The Game Awards 2020. Fortnite took the center stage during the event for a few minutes, reviving the fan-favorite machinima series Red vs. Blue to assist in the revelation of its Halo collaboration, which allows access to both Blood Gulch and Master Chief being playable on Capture the Flag mode.

Fortnite recently revealed that new bounty hunters will be arriving at the hit battle royale title, but rumors on who it would be are always hard for players provided the expansive variety that has emerged so far. Fortnite has been known for its colossal Marvel crossovers, but the title has also successfully and cleverly collaborated with titles such as Borderlands 3 and John Wick when convenient.

The reveal about The Walking Dead’s Michonne and Daryl arriving to Fortnite was short when it aired during the annual Game Awards live show and didn’t give further details aside from what the characters will look like in the game.

They were introduced via a trailer that featured Agent Jonesy dropping in on the two as they are staving off zombies, shortly glancing at them before turning on an unknown device that transports them into the Fortnite map. The trailer also showed when fans can expect to obtain The Walking Dead’s Michonne and Daryl, as both of them will be available on December 16.

The addition is another achievement for Fortnite and could open the opportunity for other The Walking Dead skins to come in the game in the near future. With so many companies keen to secure a chance to partner with Epic Games’ legendary game, it’s not shocking to see the majority of Fortnite’s announcements now involve blockbuster brands.

walking-dead-fortnite-1773682

This is another major win for Fortnite which is hastily collecting so many featured characters from across various brands that it would be simpler to list which characters are not in the game. Aside from Halo and The Walking Dead, Fortnite has also managed to secure iconic characters such as Galactus, and its fame continues to push it into new boundaries in the gaming industry, with virtual concerts now the norm across various titles becoming famous thanks to Fortnite.

Whatever will be next for Epic Games’ battle royale aside from the obvious new partnerships is worth keeping an eye on, as it could simply set another standard in the video game industry after it is featured in the battle royale first.

The Last of Us Part 2 Wins Big At TGA 2020 Including Game of the Year

After a long night full of big revelations, considerable achievements, and emotional speeches, the yearly Game Awards event for 2020 hosted by Geoff Keighley has come to an end. During the entire night, various games took home awards like Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, and Among Us. However, at the end of the evening, it was The Last of Us Part 2 who clinched the prestigious Game of the Year trophy.

Announced by renowned film director Christopher Nolan, Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic shocker managed to surpass Animal Crossing New Horizons, Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, Doom Eternal, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the coveted award.

It’s no doubt a huge distinction and one shared by very few titles in the history of the event such as The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, and God of War.

https://twitter.com/thegameawards/status/1337228087038148608?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1337228087038148608%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgamerant.com%2Fthe-last-of-us-2-wins-game-of-year-awards%2F

Aside from the distinguished Game of the Year award, The Last of Us Part 2 also won six other categories including Best Action/Adventure, Innovation in Accessibility, Best Audio Design, Best Narrative, Best Direction, and Best Performance for Laura Bailey’s role as Abby.

Ultimately, it was a pretty prevalent night for the famed first-party PlayStation studio, with creative director Neil Druckmann, who has recently been promoted as the studio’s co-president, and his development team acknowledging all those who made the game possible.

For players who still haven’t played the sequel to Naughty Dog’s influential 2013 hit game, The Last of Us Part 2 follows the story of Joel and Ellie several years after the events of the first game. Living in a peaceful town and trying to survive the apocalypse, things instantly go astray during an excursion beyond the settlement’s gates, forcing Ellie to go out on a hatred filled revenge mission against a strange woman called Abby.

Arriving in Seattle, Ellie and Dina wind up on a murderous collision course, with the ensuing massacre making for a darker, deeper, and more morally disturbing adventure compared to the original game. This resulted in the game instantly becoming one of this year’s most talked-about titles, with its surprising prologue and series of unanticipated twists and turns making it a divisive topic online.

It appears the voters were totally behind its excellence to secure the illustrious Game of the Year award, however, with the ballot containing several members of the video game industry, media, and a small number of fan voters.

Console Port of Disco Elysium Officially Announced At The Game Awards

Fans of Disco Elysium have been waiting for a console port of the game for quite some time now, and it appears that their wishes have been heard because the RPG has been confirmed to release on PS4 and PS5 at The Game Awards.

At the moment, Disco Elysium is exclusively available on PC, but that will no longer be the case next year. More specifically, the PlayStation version of the game is set to release in March 2021.

Developed and published by ZA/UM, many individuals in the gaming community have been waiting for the chance to play Disco Elysium, especially since it made quite an impact last year when it was released. As a matter of fact, it was so popular that it snatched the most awards during The Game Awards 2019. Not only that, it’s currently being turned into a TV series.

screenshot-www-youtube-com-2020-12-11-15_01_35

That being said, this announcement didn’t really come as a surprise to most fans because developer KA/UM already teased this news last year when designer and writer Robert Kurvitz said to USgamer that they were “going to port the game to consoles.”

That being said, PlayStation users will be introduced to Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, which is an enhanced version of the original title. This version contains free upgrades as well for those who already own the game.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, as mentioned, has a release window of March 2021, but a specific release date hasn’t been revealed just yet. In addition, there’s no news yet if the groundbreaking RPG will be receiving Xbox or Nintendo Switch ports, as the aforementioned PlayStation consoles were the only ones confirmed.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Disco Elysium is a one-of-a-kind RPG that’s set in a war-impacted city. Among other things that have transpired in this city is a murder, with a victim that has been rendered unidentifiable.

Players will be taking on the role of a detective who happens to have amnesia, but this won’t stop him from successfully solving this mysterious case.

What makes Disco Elysium stand out from other RPGs is its combat. Roleplaying titles similar to this one usually have some kind of intense hack-and-slash combat mechanic, but instead, Disco Elysium approaches different situations via dialogue trees and skill checks.

In addition to that, players won’t have to fight their way through hundreds of enemies. Instead, they can play the game at their own pace and tackle circumstances however they want to approach it. In other words, players have a choice — they can either fight their way through the game or be as kind and considerate as possible.

Many praised Disco Elysium not only for its unique gameplay, though, but for its narrative and writing as well. It’s an immersive game that has a lot of depth, with countless in-game characters to interact with. Even more impressive is the fact that each character is voiced.

Disco Elysium is definitely one of the greats and we’re thrilled that it’s finally heading to PlayStation consoles. Hopefully, Xbox and Nintendo Switch users will be able to play it at some point in the future as well.

Fall Guys Season 3 Winter Wonderland Trailer Officially Unveiled During The Game Awards

screenshot-www-youtube-com-2020-12-11-14_14_10

We’ve known for a while now that Mediatonic was working on the third season of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and that the theme was centered around winter. It was still exciting to hear about it during The Game Awards 2020 though, especially since the event unveiled Season 3 with a winter wonderland trailer.

The trailer not only showcased the adorable new skins, but the new stages were highlighted as well. In addition to that, fans now know when Fall Guys Season 3 will go live thanks to the trailer.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout was only released early this year, with players finding enjoyment in its silly yet competitive gameplay. The game was so successful upon launch, however, that players experienced server crashes multiple times during its first few days of release.

This didn’t really come as a surprise though, as the developer most likely didn’t expect the game to be as popular as it is now, and so the game was understandably overwhelmed by the sheer amount of players.

screenshot-www-youtube-com-2020-12-11-14_13_45

Fall Guys easily climbed its way to the top of the charts, with the PC version alone selling over 11 million copies. After the highly-successful Season 1, Mediatonic then released the medieval-themed Season 2, which introduced new skins and stages that corresponded with the theme.

For the past couple of days, Mediatonic via the official Fall Guys Twitter account has been spending a lot of time teasing and promoting the upcoming third season. Its winter theme seems appropriate too, given the fact that we’re already in December and therefore nearing the holiday/winter season.

A new obstacle for Season 3 has been revealed as well, with the Fall Guys team asking its players to help them name it like they did with Big Yeetus. This time around, the giant lollipop-like bell has been appropriately named Ringus Dingus.

Shortly after that, The Game Awards revealed the full trailer for Season 3, which was very exciting for dedicated players. Based on the trailer, Fall Guys Season 3 will have a variety of winter-themed skins, such as a penguin, a snowman, and even a reindeer.

Speaking of penguins, these adorable creatures will make an appearance as a part of the game’s stages as well. Just like in the Tail Tag minigame, where players have to grab the tail of other players, it looks like Season 3 will feature a new minigame wherein players have to grab a penguin before they run out of time.

Since Season 3 is all about winter, it’s safe to assume that it will most likely implement the classic slippery ice mechanic that so many video games utilize. In addition, the trailer also implies that there will be new stages that involve snowballs or perhaps snowball fights.

In other exciting news, we’re happy to announce that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout won Best Community Support during The Game Awards. It’s essentially an award that acknowledges Mediatonic for being transparent and responsive to its fans. Overall, the Fall Guys team has done a great job of reaching out to its community.

With Fall Guys Season 2 having ended just a few days ago, Season 3 is set to release this December 15, so mark your calendars for that.

Sephiroth From Final Fantasy 7 Revealed To Be The New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Fighter

The Game Awards 2020 took place today, and one of the surprises revealed in this event is the fact that the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Fighter happens to be Final Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth. The Nintendo of America Twitter account posted a teaser earlier saying that the award’s show will reveal a new DLC fighter for the crossover fighting video game.

Naturally, many fans dug up the many, already-existing theories concerning who the new character joining the roster might be. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released in 2018, and for most of its existence, fans have spent a good amount of time discussing possible theories as to who the next DLC fighter could be.

The recent addition was Steve from Minecraft, and while this announcement took the gaming community by storm, many fans weren’t all that surprised due to a previous leak that claimed that he would be added to the game. While players thought the leak was proven false by other DLC fighters that came before Steve, his addition refueled their belief in the leak.

As such, many theorized that the new DLC fighter would either be Ryu from Ninja Gaiden or Doom Slayer from Doom because both characters were included in the leak in question. However, the character that was announced during The Games Award this year truly took everyone by surprise.

screenshot-www-youtube-com-2020-12-11-10_44_30

The addition of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 was unexpected because he was never really rumored to appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate before. His reveal came with a trailer, where Sephiroth showed off his moves and quick swordplay while the character’s theme song played in the background. Not only that, the trailer featured his meteor ability as well, which looks rather incredible.

After the initial shock and excitement wore off, players are now discussing how Final Fantasy 7’s main antagonist fits in the overall gameplay system of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Adding new characters in any game is never easy, and most especially so for a fighting game like this one. After all, there’s always the possibility that the new character might be too overpowered.

At the moment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has done a great job at not following the footsteps of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, as its competitive scene fell apart at the hands of Cloud and Bayonetta. However, there’s always the possibility of the same thing happening to Smash Ultimate with each new character.

screenshot-www-youtube-com-2020-12-11-10_44_02

In any case, fans shouldn’t worry about that now. We haven’t experienced playing as the character yet, so he might turn out perfectly balanced after all. For now, we should all bask in this big moment — the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be welcoming Sephiroth as a DLC fighter is a big deal and should be cause for excitement within the Smash community.

Speaking of, the community has been through a lot the past couple of months, what with Nintendo shutting down the Super Smash Bros. tournament. As such, it’s great to just take a breather and enjoy this new content.

Left 4 Dead Spiritual Sequel Back 4 Blood Trailer and Gameplay Revealed At TGA 2020

maxresdefault-10-7

The recently concluded The Game Awards 2020 finally gave fans an impressive first look at Turtle Rock Studio’s new four-person coop zombie shooting game, Back 4 Blood. The spiritual sequel of Valve’s Left 4 Dead franchise is proof that a remarkably formulated zombie game, much like a zombie itself, never really dies.

In spite of years of rumors over a Left 4 Dead 3, the supposed new entry in the groundbreaking zombie franchise never managed to make it to production, although Valve didn’t seem to be bothered by it. However, the good guys at Turtle Rock Studios saw the importance of cooperative survival games and started making Back 4 Blood, which they revealed back in March 2019. There wasn’t much information provided back then besides its concept art until last night’s big announcement at The Game Awards 2020 live streaming event.

Back 4 Blood’s first official trailer video brings back memories of the Left 4 Dead intros and trailers of the past which features four characters fighting it out against hordes of zombies, along with several specially mutated creatures with unique abilities, in a world infected by the zombie apocalypse.

There were familiar weapons featured from the original games as well such as M-16s, SMGs, handguns, shotguns, Molotov cocktails, and even nail bats. However, the new game’s difference from Left 4 Dead is that Back 4 Blood actually contains a backstory as to where the zombie apocalypse began, which may imply that the new game will be a little bit more story-focused than its predecessor. Otherwise, the action and gameplay are most likely the same, which is definitely fine.

Even if this is not actually Left 4 Dead 3, since Valve has obviously abandoned the franchise completely, but this is absolutely close. Back 4 Blood is about as accurate as it can get as a reincarnation of Left 4 Dead, down to its title’s spelling and even punctuation marks.

Developer Turtle Rock appears to be dedicated to reminding Valve that they had the golden ticket with its original Left 4 Dead series and that they didn’t do anything about it – Turtle Rock is certainly committed not to make the same mistake. It’s familiar enough that fans of the Left 4 Dead franchise will no doubt be purchasing a copy when it will be released.

However, its exact release date has yet to be revealed since the trailer didn’t provide any information about it. While Back 4 Blood was originally scheduled to release on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, the fact that the first trailer is only revealed now, a few weeks after the next-gen consoles were released, it’s safe to say that the game will be adapted for the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5.

Epic Games Store Holiday Sale Plans To Release Free Games For 15 Days

0
screenshot-www-epicgames-com-2020-12-11-09_13_03

The month of December is exciting for many reasons. Asides from the fact that it’s a festive time for family and friends to get together, December is also the time for major holiday sales. While these sales haven’t started just yet, Epic Games Store is already prepping its PC users for the highly-anticipated event.

Today, the company has finally confirmed that the Epic Games Store Holiday Sale will start on December 17, with major discounts up to 75% on a variety of games. What’s even more exciting is the fact that Epic will be bringing back a tradition that every gamer out there looks forward to annually: the Days of Free Games. This time, however, Epic Games will be releasing a new free game every single day for 15 days instead of the usual 12.

As a matter of fact, Epic Games has already begun teasing the upcoming holiday giveaway on its Store. There are two new free games displayed for this week, namely Pillars of Eternity – Definitive Edition and Tyranny – Gold Edition. However, there’s a third mystery game that will only unlock on December 17 when the Holiday Sale begins.

Instead of showcasing a teaser image for the upcoming free game, the thumbnail is of an Epic Games wrapping paper instead.

epic

The Mystery Game shown on the Epic Games Store right now will be the first free game available during the anticipated Holiday Sale event. After the free games for this week expire, they will be replaced with more mystery games.

Once the giveaway starts, PC gamers will see a new gift from Epic and its partners which they can claim for free. If our calculations are correct, gamers will be able to redeem a free game every day from December 17 through December 31.

That being said, we have yet to see what Epic has planned for 2021. One possibility is that the company will continue to offer free games on a weekly basis just like it has done this year. Although, it’s also possible that Epic will be celebrating the arrival of the new year by continuing the daily giveaway.

On the other hand, there’s a chance that 2021 will stop the practice entirely. After all, there’s no guarantee that Epic will continue offering free games next year. Epic Games has been incredibly generous with its free game giveaways, and that’s even an understatement to say.

https://twitter.com/EpicGames/status/1337064849285767170?s=20

Those who have been claiming the free games every week without fail should have a library full of video games without having used a single cent. It’s really a win-win situation because Epic gets something out of this deal as well.

The Epic Games Store has expanded so much since it was originally launched, and we can imagine that these giveaways played a part as to why users would flock to this digital storefront. That being said, the 15 Days of Free Games giveaway has a disclaimer that users need to keep in mind.

According to the fine print, the offered games will only be free for 24 hours and not any longer. Once that given time period is up, the game will be replaced with the next free title. As such, gamers who have an Epic Games account should definitely check out the Store every single day once the event begins so that they don’t miss out on a thing.

Ark 2 Featuring Vin Diesel Revealed At The Game Awards 2020

maxresdefault-9-7

It’s an exciting night for the video game industry as the annual Game Awards is not only announcing the winners for major categories, but fans are also witnessing the debut of trailers and all kinds of announcements as well.

The new digital event has revealed other major high-quality announcements including Sephiroth joining the already massive roster of Super Smash Bros Ultimate to some newer undisclosed games such as Back 4 Blood by Turtle Rock Studio which is inspired by the hit multiplayer shooting game Left 4 Dead. Studio Wildcard, the developers of Ark: Survival Evolved, also had a shocking revelation of their own thanks to a surprising appearance by a Hollywood celebrity.

The new trailer for Ark 2 featured more of what fans loved about the original game, humans fighting it out with dinosaurs, various prehistoric creatures, as well as several original and legendary monsters as well. Although the debut trailer was mostly CG, it appears to contain a lot of familiar components while outing a better focus on its storytelling as well.

https://twitter.com/survivetheark/status/1337205017762258944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1337205017762258944%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgamerant.com%2Fark-2-announced-vin-diesel%2F

However, perhaps the bigger surprise came right at the beginning before the logo of the game was shown. Vin Diesel, a highly acclaimed Hollywood actor involved in multiple film franchises such as Pitch Black and Fast & Furious, appeared in the trailer as the lead character in a clan of characters. Soon enough, his tribe gets attacked by a group of monsters which Vin Diesel’s character, Santiago, is forced to fend off. To make things worse, the clash gets interrupted by vicious dinosaurs.

Vin Diesel’s character was ultimately able to ward off the attacking monsters as well as avoid the hungry dinosaurs by escaping into what seems to be the safety of a cave system. Rather, the large room unveils a bunch of futuristic devices laying around similar to Horizon Zero Dawn.

The room apparently glows like its powering up, mixing the gadgets with stone pillars holding primitive drawings. Obviously familiar with the technology, Vin Diesel inputs a code into the Genesis System interface powering it down for the time being.

The announcement of the sequel as well as the unveiling of Vin Diesel’s character Santiago was just the beginning for Studio Wildcard. Following the surprising trailer for Ark 2, the developers announced another trailer for Ark: The Animated Series.

The animated series showcased several actors involved with the new project such as Malcolm McDowell, Karl Urban, Russel Crowe, Gerald Butler, and a lot more. Not much detail was revealed about the new project yet aside from the fact that it will be focusing on Helena’s backstory.

How horrible business practices in gaming started

Payments within games have existed for a long time, but in recent months developers have begun to introduce microtransactions in paid games. This provoked a series of conflicts between studios and gamers dissatisfied with the double payment system

The global video game market in 2017 exceeded $120 billion, analysts of the research company SuperData calculated. A large part of this amount came from microtransactions – payments inside games for additional functions. This method of monetization has existed for a long time, mostly it is used in mobile and free to install games.

However, in recent months, developers have begun to actively introduce microtransactions in paid games. This provoked a series of conflicts between studios and gamers, dissatisfied with the double payment system: users actually have to fork out both during the purchase of the game and for the right to access its “full” version with all the artifacts.

However, companies are not going to abandon the profitable strategy: according to SuperData, In 2019, gamers spent $22 billion on microtransactions (for comparison: revenues from the sales of games on PC and consoles amounted to only $8 billion), and in five years the amount will grow to $25 billion. Lootboxes create a lot of problems among gamers and in this article, we will have a look at this topic.

Star Wars Battlefront II

Ahead of the release of the eighth episode of Star Wars, Electronic Arts (EA), licensed by Disney to supplement the movie saga with game blockbusters, released the multiplayer shooter Battlefront 2. The company six months before the release introduced a new system of transactions within the game: users were offered to buy virtual “credits” that could be spent on so-called star maps. Maps, in turn, “pumped” the functions of the characters through the opening of loot boxes.

A month before its release, EA launched an open beta test. Participants of the experiment immediately noted the viciousness of the economics of the game: the model with star maps assumes that not the player’s skills determine success, but the thickness of the wallet. In general access for an impressive amount, EA planned to sell only a part of the content, outraged gamers. The company in response assured that it will make changes, but the adjustments were cosmetic and did not affect the essence of monetization.

The game was made by the Swedish developer DICE. If we take a look at the concept of loot boxes it is very similar to slots in online casinos. You do not know what you will receive when you open the box. But the criticism was headed towards the fact that most parts of the boxes held no value and were useless for gamers. The game became very popular in other Scandinavian countries as well. Norway was at the forefront in this regard. The country’s gambling industry drew some inspiration from these loot boxes. Some of the top-rated Norwegian casinos online decided to introduce the idea of loot boxes in their games, which unlike Battlefront worked effectively, because it was thematic to the platform.

A few days before the release of Battlefront 2, a Star Wars fan posted a post on Reddit in which he resented the lack of access to all the game’s content. According to Forbes, the extraction of all items, characters and other upgrades inside the shooter costs more than $2,000 or 4,000 hours of additional missions. When the post gained popularity, an EA representative came to the branch. Instead of acknowledging the mistakes, he said the company had provided players with a “sense of pride in achievement.” The comment turned out to be historic – it scored the most “downvotes” in the history of Reddit. The number of negative reactions approached 700,000 on the day of the release of EA, faced with a barrage of criticism in social networks and media, temporarily disabled the transaction system.

The first days of sales were accompanied by protests of fans and critics of experts. In Britain alone, sales of games on physical media for the week were 61% lower than the same figure of the first part of the shooter. The user rating on Metacritic was below one point out of a hundred with almost 3,000 ratings.

EA ended November on a minor note: the stock lost in value by almost 10%, the capitalization fell by almost $3 billion. At the end of January, the CFO of the company Blake Jorgensen stated that the game’s sales at the end of the quarter amounted to 9 million copies – 1 million copies below the forecast.

Middle Earth: Shadow of War

One of the first ones to encourage gamers with loot boxes or their own money decided American Monolith, the developer of the series of games on the universe Lord of the Rings. In the regular game saga Middle Earth: Shadow of War, the studio invited players to buy boxes with rare artifacts. In the case of Shadow of War, the loot boxes were most often orcs, the main element of the project’s game mechanics. It was possible to replenish the army with orcs and just spending time in the game, but it took an order of magnitude more time.

Fans of Shadow of War soon began to organize their discontent on image boards and forums, and the main platform of the riot was Reddit. Despite the user protests, Monolith did not respond to the claims. The Shadow of War scandal came to naught without consequences for the studio but paved the way for the next, even more, resonant loot box scandals.

Destiny 2

The anger of gamers was also visible in the second part of the shooter Destiny. It all started with the release of the add-on, which closed access to some of the content to players who didn’t buy it. The American studio offered an alternative to payment – participation in special in-game missions, but gamers felt that there was no motivation to receive artifacts when all of them can be bought. At the end of December, the official forum of the game was inundated with proposals to close the in-game store. According to users, its work contradicted the high cost of the game: for the main version and two additions, the developer asks for more than $90, and along with internal purchases comes out even more. Unlike EA, Bungie made contact with users: the developer ensured that microtransactions would never extend to artifacts that influenced the passage of the game’s main scenario.
