Square Enix Gets Sued For Using Dragon Quest Character In Film Adaptation

The English release for the movie Dragon Quest: Your Story from 2019 was debuted on Netflix earlier this year. For those who don’t know what this movie is, it’s an animated film adaptation of Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, which was a 1992 Super Nintendo game by Square Enix.

Even though the game itself wasn’t heavily criticized, despite the fact that it wasn’t able to copy the iconic art style of Akira Toriyama and that it received a bit of backlash for how it ended, the movie adaptation was one of the top 25 highest-grossing films last year in Japan.

In December of last year, however, the novelist for Dragon Quest 5, Saori Kumi, stated that she was going to file a lawsuit against the movie’s production committee for making use of the Hero Ryuka a.k.a Luca in the Dragon Quest 5 film. In more recent news though, it appears that she will be suing not only Square Enix but Toho Co., Ltd. as well.

If you’ve been a long-term fan of Dragon Quest, you probably know by now that most entries in the franchise have a silent main protagonist who doesn’t even have a name, as he only gets called “Hero.” Dragon Quest 5 is no different.

“Hero” is the general name given to all the main protagonists in the Dragon Quest series, and in fact, this was even the name given to the character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. That being said, this isn’t necessarily the case for spin-off materials based on the video games in the series, as the protagonist usually gets a name like Dragon Quest 5‘s Luca (Ryuka).

This name for the Hero was initially used in the Japan-exclusive novel based on Dragon Quest 5, which was published following the game’s release. Now, this is where the issue lies because this novelization in question was written by Saori Kumi, and she was the one who thought of the name Ryuka. This was later localized to Luca due to the English release of the movie.

In December 2019, Kumi sued the production committee of Dragon Quest: Your Story, only asking for credit as well as an apology. In her most recent lawsuit, however, Kumi also sued developer Square Enix and requested 2 million yen in damages.

In addition to that, she also asks for both companies, namely Square Enix and Toho Co., Ltd., to give her a public apology. This lawsuit was made possible after numerous Japanese Dragon Quest fans kept supporting her cause for many months via crowdfunding platforms.

This situation is indeed very tricky because while Kumi did conceptualize Dragon Quest 5’s protagonist’s name in the novelization, the character has already had a designated design and appearance from the original video game from 1992, which is obviously legally owned by Square Enix.

However, it’s rather disappointing to hear that Kumi wasn’t even given credit for the character’s name. After all, it’s quite clear that the movie stuck with the name Ryuka in an attempt to catch the attention of those who are fans of the novelization.

InnerSloth To Reveal New Among Us Map During The Game Awards

Geoff Keighley, the host and founder of The Game Awards, has announced on his social media that a brand-new map for Among Us will be revealed during this year’s awards show. The map was previously teased on the game’s official Twitter account a while back, but from what we know, the new map is going to have a new set of tasks and will be set in a brand-new, in-game location.

Not a lot of information has been revealed about this new map yet except the fact that it’s going to have some kind of spaceship deck. In addition to that, developer InnerSloth also previously revealed that the new area is going to be inspired by The Henry Stickmin Collection, which is a game that it released in the past.

The fact that an Among Us announcement will be featured in this year’s event doesn’t come as a surprise. The Game Awards has a history of revealing and announcing games through trailers and gameplay segments. As such, we speculate that this Among Us reveal will feature streamers or well-known individuals playing a quick game in this new map.

In other news, InnerSloth’s social deduction online game has been nominated for two awards in this year’s The Game Awards. In the Best Mobile Game category, Among Us will be up against Legends of Runeterra, Pokemon Cafe Mix, Call of Duty Mobile, and Genshin Impact.

Even though it’s a highly popular game on mobile, Among Us has also been receiving recognition on PC. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the most popular games to stream on Twitch, so much so that streamer Valkyrae received a significant boost in followers and viewers after she began playing Among Us on her streams.

The game is also nominated for Best Multiplayer Game, and it has a pretty solid set of competitors. The other nominees for this category include Valorant, Fall Guys, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Given how we’re currently living through an ongoing pandemic, everyone is forced to stay at home and distance themselves from other people in order to avoid getting the virus. As a result of this, online multiplayer titles such as Sea of Thieves and Rocket League have seen a significant increase in players, the latter even setting a new player record this year.

Without a doubt, this year’s The Game Awards is going to feel and work differently compared to previous years since the entire event is going to be hosted digitally as a precaution against COVID-19.

Just because there will be a lack of fan presence though doesn’t mean that guest stars won’t be making an appearance. Tom Holland from Spider-Man and Uncharted is confirmed to be a guest, while Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will be performing as well.

Things may be different now, but one thing will remain the same and that’s the surprise announcements usually made during this annual event.

Over A Dozen League Of Legends Champions Will Be Getting Buffs In Upcoming Patch

League of Legends remains to be one of the most popular video games out there, and Riot Games still continues to release regular updates to improve it as well as add new content. Recently, League of Legends’ Gameplay Design Director, Mark Yetter, shared a few details to fans on Twitter regarding the upcoming 10.25 patch and what they can expect from it.

The information he revealed included a bunch of nerfs and buffs for both the Champions and many items within the game. League of Legends players are currently in the middle of Preseason 2021, which means that it’s to be expected that the game will undergo numerous changes.

At the moment, the team behind Riot Game’s multiplayer battle arena is still taking note of what works and what doesn’t, especially since several new items have recently been added to the game as well as the implementation of Mythic items.

Thanks to Yetter though, League of Legends players now have an idea of what the changes are going to be before they officially go live. According to his tweets, the next patch is going to buff about 21 League of Legends Champions.

These buffs will be spread out across different Champion categories and lanes. According to Yetter, Anivia is going to get a pretty great buff on all her stats. These buffs aim to give her a more general, quality of life balance.

Riot Games will be making some changes to Pantheon as well. More specifically, he will receive buffs that will make him a better Champion on the top-lane, including changes made to his abilities’ cooldown and damage capabilities.

Moving on, Warwick, Talon, Irelia, Karthus, Lulu, and Mordekaiser will be getting damage boosts. On the other hand, Champions such as Yone, Twitch, and Yasuo will receive attack speed increases.

Several Jungle Champions, like Ekko, Taliyah, Rengar, and Wukong, will be receiving buffs in that they will be able to deal extra damage to the various monsters. That being said, other Junglers will receive other kinds of adjustments as well.

For the more Champion-specific buffs, Ivern’s cooldown and shield will be receiving a few changes, while his ultimate ability, Daisy, will be increased in attack speed. On the other hand, Nidalee’s Q ability will receive increased scaling as well as reduced mana costs, while Lee Sin will be getting some tweaks for his armor, damage, and cooldown.

One of the more recent Champions, Seraphine, will also be receiving some adjustments. We can see why this is necessary though since Riot Games is currently working to shift Seraphine away from the support role to being someone who fights on the mid-lane instead.

Sad to say, not every Champion in League of Legends will be receiving a buff in the upcoming update. Samira, Morgana, Kayn, Kayle, Jhin, Fizz, and Annie will be getting nerfed instead.

Samira already got nerfed a few months ago a day after she went live, and the fact that she’s getting yet another nerf most likely means that Riot Games still considers her to be too strong.

While this will probably be disappointing news for those who mainly use these Champions, we can imagine that battles against them will no longer be as frustrating. In any case, League of Legends’ 10.25 patch is expected to launch on December 9, which will also be when the newest Champion, Rell, will be released.

Mask Of The Rose Is A Lovecraftian Romance Visual Novel Set In An Underground London

Failbetter Games is a British independent studio that’s commonly known for developing interactive games. One franchise this studio is known for is the Fallen London series, which is an interactive browser-based game that’s set in an alternate Victorian London called the “Fallen London.”

The developer later added two new games to the franchise, Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies. In recent news, Failbetter Games announced that it’s currently working on a brand-new game called Mask of the Rose.

Mask of the Rose, just like its other titles, will also take place in the Fallen London universe. However, the catch is that this upcoming game is going to be a romantic visual novel instead of being an action-adventure title like the others.

Failbetter Games considers Mask of the Rose to be a prequel to the original title, as the story will take place only a few months after London was stolen by bats, plunging the city into what is called the “Neath.”

For context, the Neath is basically this massive underground cavern that’s situated underneath the surface of the Earth. As you can imagine, the Neath doesn’t follow the same rules and processes as on the surface. As such, people have a lot of adjusting to do. It’s very similar to Lovecraftian horror, that is if the genre wasn’t always so horrifying.

In Mask of the Rose, you’ll be playing a character who is living in a boarding house with other interesting people, including a local constable, a medical student, and a landlady. Each character in this visual novel has their own backstories, and if you want, you can also meddle in their personal drama.

According to Failbetter Games’ announcement, Mask of the Rose is going to have multiple plots that you can choose to be a part of, immersing yourself in each storyline. For instance, one plot has you “intervening in a murder trial where the victim is a witness.” Another option has you “steering a hooded, vocabularious Master through the subtleties of a London courtship.”

By the way, this new, fallen version of London is ruled by the Masters of the Bazaar. Although technically, a parliament and a ruling monarch are still present.

The art style of Mask of the Rose is pretty similar to the previous games in Failbetter Games’ repertoire. The only visible difference is that this one now has a more Film Noir effect to it. It’s nice, though.

The game doesn’t have a release date just yet, or at least the developer hasn’t revealed their estimated goal, but it’s going to be up on Kickstarter in February 2021.

Fans of Failbetter Games will be happy to know that the developer plans to release three new projects, the first of which will be Mask of the Rose. In other news, Sunless Skies Sovereign Edition has already been sent to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo for certification.

With this edition, console users will be able to play Failbetter Games’ latest title, Sunless Skies, for the first time. It will definitely bring a whole new experience to this title, as fans will be able to play the game with a controller this time around.

CD Projekt Red Requests That Fans Don’t Stream Cyberpunk 2077 Before Its Official Release Day

After being in development for a long time and undergoing multiple delays, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally going to be released next week on December 10, 2020. To ensure that the hype doesn’t die down, CD Projekt Red has continuously promoted the game on social media, posting a variety of trailers that showcase its features.

For instance, the developer recently dropped a trailer touting the game’s photo mode. However, it appears that CD Projekt Red would prefer it if fans didn’t release any footage from the game that didn’t come from the developer itself in order to avoid any spoilers from spreading.

It’s highly likely that content creators were given early copies of Cyberpunk 2077, but it appears that CD Projekt Red is also concerned about spoilers getting leaked by those who happen to own the game early.

Cyberpunk 2077’s official Twitter account posted a tweet “kindly” asking fans and players “not to stream/let’s play, or release any similar content before December 9th, 12 PM CET/3 AM PST.” Although, the post does admit that it’s going to be hard for the community to be completely free of spoilers before the designated launch day.

That being said, there are going to be consequences for those who don’t follow this request. The tweet implies that videos will be taken down if they’re posted before the game’s official release.

CD Projekt Red attempts to disguise this threat though by saying that the MAX-TAC or the Maximum Force Tactical Division of the in-game police will be the ones responsible for taking down the videos.

Those who read the post will most likely get tonal whiplash just like we did. After all, the message starts off with the developer “kindly asking” its fans this one request, which is followed by takedown threats.

The message ends with a sobering thought, which jokingly suggests that since it’s currently 2020 and so much has happened already, tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. That being said, we completely understand why CD Projekt Red is concerned about spoilers, given how there were already a couple of leaks that took place last month in November.

In addition, Cyberpunk 2077’s preorders already surpassed any Witcher title, so there’s going to be a lot of people playing this game.

Even though CD Projekt Red has been under a lot of criticism lately because of all the delays as well as the mandatory crunch time that was required of its employees, it can’t be denied that the excitement fans feel towards Cyberpunk 2077’s looming release is palpable.

Cyberpunk 2077’s New Trailer Highlights Photo Mode

CD Projekt Red has been on a roll promoting its upcoming action RPG, so much so that one might think that there’s nothing new about the game they can promote at this point. However, it appears that the developer’s marketing team still has a lot up its sleeve.

This time around, the newest trailer highlights Cyberpunk 2077’s photo mode, giving players an idea of just how detailed the options will be if they want to take an in-game screenshot.

From what we can see in the trailer, the game’s photo mode is possibly one of the most detailed options out there, offering players everything they could possibly want in this kind of feature.

There’s a range of effects to choose from, such as contrast, grain, highlights, and more. Similar to the PlayStation’s Spider-Man titles, Cyberpunk 2077’s photo mode will also have a variety of stickers as well as photo frames.

Not only that, there are more in-depth camera options available too. This gives players full control over Depth of Field settings as well as the camera’s Field of View. As shown in some of the more detailed samples found in the trailer, players are also given the ability to change V’s poses as well as facial expressions.

We aren’t entirely surprised by this aspect because CD Projekt Red previously confirmed that there will be a variety of poses available for V in the photo mode, however, it’s still great that we got to see it in action in the trailer.

One sample shows the character in the middle of an intense gunfight, while another sample highlights a pose that may be familiar to fans of the video game Dark Souls.

Long-time Dark Souls fans along with several YouTubers flooded the trailer’s comments section with “Praise The Sun” because one pose, as shown in the trailer, has V copying the iconic Solaire from Dark Souls.

For more context, Solaire is a character who is known for a particular pose wherein he raises both his arms in the air to form a V shape. In the trailer, V does that very same pose while an explosion takes place in the background.

The pose is aptly called “V for Victory,” which fits given the fact that the protagonist is named V. That being said, we don’t know for sure if CD Projekt Red intentionally meant this pose to be a Dark Souls reference, but we’re sure that many fans will think so.

Given how detailed this photo mode is, we can definitely see that CD Projekt Red put a lot of time and effort into this feature. Most of the time, a video game’s photo mode gets updated throughout its lifetime, like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s photo mode, for example.

However, Cyberpunk 2077’s photo mode already gives its players everything they could possibly want and need from the get-go. Those who enjoy taking in-game photography and the like will surely have a blast going through the different options available.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release next week — finally — after how many years of waiting. It won’t be long now before fans can explore and experience the streets of Night City.

Dead by Daylight Announces Holiday Horror Collection

It’s December now, which means that countless games are now preparing for the holiday season. It appears that Behaviour Interactive’s Dead by Daylight will be joining in on the festivities, despite the fact that it’s an asymmetric horror game.

The developer released a trailer recently promoting the brand-new Holiday Horror Collection, which contains holiday-themed cosmetics. The collection specifically has new outfit sets for two killers and new outfits for six survivors.

This collection of cosmetics won’t be available all at once though; each one will be slowly added to the game within the month. Once the outfit gets released, you will be able to buy them anytime from the in-game store, as they join the ranks of the other cosmetics.

With that in mind, some outfits are complete sets on their own and can’t be mixed and matched with others e.g. the onesies.

The only cosmetic available from this collection so far is Elodie Rakoto’s Reindeer Onesie outfit set. She’s the newest survivor that was introduced to the game in the A Binding of Kin chapter, so many players might be interested in this one.

In line with this, the new Killer known as The Twins also gets a new Blood and Guts outfit. As the name suggests, this outfit features fresh organs that The Twins wrap around their body — something to keep them warm during the cold winter nights.

The Trapper’s Krampus outfit set is scheduled to go live on December 4. This outfit basically transforms the original Behavior Interactive Killer into the Krampus, which is basically a well-known Christmas horror legend.

The Krampus is known to take away naughty children during Christmas, with the legend saying that he presumably punishes these bad children in some form or another. To match this, The Trapper’s Krampus outfit also features a basket that looks like it contains something still alive.

Following that, on December 8, the festive, holiday-themed outfits for Zarina Kassir, Dwight Fairfield, and Ace Visconti are going to be released. Similar to Elodie, Zarina is also wearing her own onesie called the Penguin Onesie.

Dwight’s outfit, on the other hand, is called Dwight-In-A-Box. The cosmetic has him wearing festive glasses, a Santa hat, fluffy slippers, as well as what looks to be a wearable present.

Meanwhile, Ace is wearing a green suit that’s designed like a Christmas tree along with reindeer-shaped glasses. This outfit is called Winter Wisecracks.

The remaining cosmetics in the collection will be released on December 11, which will feature Claudette Morel and Jake Park. Claudette’s outfit, which is aptly named Claudette Claus, features a green holiday-themed skirt, a red Santa sweater, and a knitted cap.

Last but not least, Jake received one of the most comfortable outfits available in the set. Called the Winter Comfort outfit set, Jake is wearing a red robe with a white Christmas tree pattern. Underneath the robe looks to be a thermal shirt with a very deep V cut. He’s also wearing pajama bottoms to complete the look.

On their scheduled dates, the outfits will be available on Dead by Daylight’s in-game store and can be purchased using Auric Cells. It’s also worth noting that you can’t use iridescent shards to buy the ones that are available in the store right now.

Travis Scott Earned $20M From Fortnite Digital Concert

Travis Scott allegedly made at least $20 million from his unorthodox Fortnite concert earlier this year. During the concert, players gathered to watch the rapper perform live via a colossal hologram. There were also merchandise available, but the event is free and online made it far more accessible. The concert was a huge success with more than 12 million players watching at the same time.

Recently, Travis Scott has been collaborating with various companies to help promote their products. Almost a month ago, he partnered up with Sony in advertising the PlayStation 5. It was a pretty short ad and certainly nothing to the scale of his concert in Fortnite.

He also partnered with Mcdonald’s to advertise a “Travis Scott Meal.” It is unknown if Travis Scott will continue collaborating with other companies in the future, but it is highly likely to see the triumph of the abovementioned promotions.

Forbes recently talked about the success of Travis Scott in advertising these companies, revealing that the rapper made “roughly $20 million for it including merchandise sales,” just from his performance in Fortnite.

These collaborations are not only advantageous on one side, as the event absolutely brought the spotlight to Fortnite as well, and proved viability as an online event center.  Fortnite and Travis Scott held a concert that showcased a unique performance to fans across the globe, now with other video games trying to make their own virtual concerts.

Roblox recently partnered with Lil Nas X to do a similar in-game concert, taking motivation from Travis Scott’s Fortnite experience. Roblox managed to allure more than 33 million fans to watch Lil Nas X perform live, in comparison to just 12.3 million players for Fortnite.

Forbes didn’t talk about this route video game companies are taking, attempting to push for a more expansive demographic by holding these events. This also adds to the advantage of procuring gamers to download the game, even if they are not interested in it initially.

In the future, companies are likely to make more collaborations like this. As stated earlier, Travis Scott also engaged in one of the advertisements for PlayStation 5. Sony took it further by announcing that the rapper will also be designing his own custom PlayStation 5 that will soon be available on the market.

It appears like the future of marketing is creators of all types coming together to share their work with everyone, as it implies that events like Fortnite’s virtual concert are far more interactive and efficient than a 30-second ad.

Retailer Cancels 1000+ Xbox Series X Orders After Scalper Brags About Them

A scalper group that was too fond of bragging about its increasing haul recently had its proclivity for boasting backfire, with more than 1000 of its supposed Xbox Series X orders canceled by the seller in a sweet tale of justice. The scalping group in question is one that not too long ago revealed to have gotten over 2500 PlayStation 5 consoles at release. However, its latest conspiracy has been overturned.

The launch of new consoles is always an exciting time. Unsurprisingly, the arrival of the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 a few weeks ago was no exemption. The two launches were filled with controversies, though, because in large part to scalper groups taking advantage of online preorders.

Utilizing various techniques and bots, scalpers were able to secure the next-gen consoles en masse, sometimes getting orders by the hundreds. The newly obtained machines are then resold by various groups or personally, and always cost more than the system’s original price.

One certain scalper group’s orders were recently stopped by a UK video game seller. A few hours ago, the scalpers posted on social media and revealed that they had secured more than a thousand Xbox Series X units from a “very well-known online retailer.”

Allegedly, this was performed by notifying the group members, which pay subscription fees of £30 a month or a lifetime subscription worth £400, about the restock of Xbox consoles at the famous online shop.

A report made by Sky News suggests the seller was no other than UK-based Very, which usually allows its customers to order one console at a time. It would appear that the scalpers found a way around, but has since backfired.

Very’s spokesperson revealed that “as a result of a technical error, some people were able to place orders for PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles for a short time on Sunday.” Since these products were not supposed to be for sale, the orders made on them have been canceled.

However, customers who legally bought one of the consoles, and didn’t order them at large volumes, are similarly affected by the cancellation. Everyone who ordered will receive refunds within 2 to 3 days, the Very spokesperson revealed on national TV.

While this is indeed great news in terms of putting an end to scalpers, it also adds to the ongoing turmoil about Microsoft’s and Sony’s stock issues on their new consoles. Sony has pledged that more stock will arrive at retailers before the end of the year. Xbox Series X|S stocks are also sold out, with no announcement yet about when the next-gen console will be available for purchase.
